Bettacreek - New home? Plus a pic of some of the ladies here

I guess part of my problem is that I try to make everything based on what I'd pay. I have FINALLY come to the conclusion that I cannot market them to people like me anymore. It's pointless, really, because I started making soaps and stuff myself because I was too cheap to pay retail. So, why...

Bettacreek - New home? Plus a pic of some of the ladies here

Yeah, I'm going to have to increase them. I'd hate to take them away. There have been a few somewhat regular customers who use them for themselves or their children (eczema and other conditions), and knowing how miserable being itchy is, I can't just say "sorry, I am too lazy to make them...

Bettacreek - New home? Plus a pic of some of the ladies here

Ugh! I have had NO energy at all lately. Day before yesterday I scrubbed the house down really, really well (literally, used a scrub brush on all of the floors and a paint scraper on a few spots that wouldn't come up). Last night I didn't get any sleep. Was worried about my far-ranging group...

    Firearms for the Homestead

Personally, I'd say 30-06, .22 rifle, bow and a shotgun. Maybe even an air rifle. 30-06 will take down just about anything, .22 rifle is dirt cheap ammo and can be used for vermin, shotgun for small game/protection, air rifle would be neat for vermin and discreet hunting, bow for discreet...

    Canning baby food

Yuck. Have you ever tried, or even SMELLED commercial baby food? The meat all smells like canned cat food. No lie. I couldn't force myself to try it, and couldn't force myself to make my kids try it either. The only thing we really used was the baby cereal. Everything else, I just started...

    DIY MREs

I read somewhere that Campbell's was going to discontinue their canned products and start packing them in pouches instead. Some of them could be a MRE for one or two people all by themselves.

livin' on the funny farm- SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES!!! Last year, I didn't do much with the apple trees, they were bountiful and pretty well wasted (made some cobbler and the rest went to the ducks), this year, now that I have canning jars, the two trees didn't produce a single apple. :(

    Hurricane Sandy

Where are you at? We're Central PA. Lots of rain here. Haven't heard of any flooding, but not sure who's out there really. I haven't been more than a mile from home since yesterday, lol.

    Hurricane Sandy

Our power has been flickering here, but nothing major yet. No end of the world for Central Pennsylvania yet. The wind is pretty bad though. Blew one of my chickens partway across the yard when she escaped, but it was just a gust and she made it back to safety. I think she's much more happy about...

What did you do to save $ today?

Two days ago, it was getting cold enough to need to heat the house, but I had some stuff left to can up, so instead of turning the heat on, I just got on the canning, which heated up my house as a "by-product". Two birds, one stone, money saved. :D

    Hurricane Sandy

I'm filling up drinking water jugs tonight. I'll do the buckets for flushing the toilets in the morning. Just too sick to feel like doing it tonight. If we have to go take a crap in the woods for it, so be it.

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

More peppers in red sauce. I still have probably two more canner loads, then jalapeno peppers, then some beets. Oh, plus a few jars of pork stock and maybe some cubed lamb. Obviously it won't all be finished tonight, lol.

Bettacreek - New home? Plus a pic of some of the ladies here

Haha! I love the less popular meats. Duck is better than chicken, lamb is better than beef and of course, the best meat EVER is venison. :D My breeding flock is a little different, but only in the fact that we added four new turkey hens. As of right now, we have: 5 Turkey toms 4 Turkey hens...

Feeding Chickens just People food...Can it be done??

I guess I forgot to mention the brewery grain. I wasn't picking it up on a regular basis, but with the cold kicking in and especially since I'm starting to give artifical light to get them back up to full laying steam, I started to bulk up on my brewery grain. I picked some up the other day...

After over a hundred hatchlings, failed incubations, mail orders......

The barred rocks here are pretty docile, but the other dual purpose birds are meaner than cat ****. Well, ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I can certainly say that the leghorns are friendly and will eat out of your hand and even jump to get a piece of food without taking half of your finger...

    keeping a mixed flock

Everyone here runs together. Turkeys, ducks and chickens. That includes chickens ranging from the 15lb cornish cross roo down to 1.5lb OEGB roo (and even his chicks, two 6oz little rats). The only problem I've had so far is that my dominant turkey is in full swing of breeding and has no hens, so...

After over a hundred hatchlings, failed incubations, mail orders......

If you have the option of free-range, I really recommend that for the cornish cross. Out of forty of them, I have had ONE leg issue, and that one was actually injured by another rooster. Despite what people swear, they simply are NOT lazy if you don't treat them like they're lazy. Mine...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

I still have a BUNCH to can, but I do have a dozen pints of peppers in red sauce and seven pints of green beans. I have another bushel and a half of banana peppers to can, about a half of a bushel of beets, and some more green beans that are in the freezer now (and may just sit there). I've...

Yup. Plus they're expensive to purchase them as well. So, no Canadian geese here.
