Found it! I think this is the one you meant, Merle.

Okay, now that is a neat idea. "Camo" the outside so it looks looted. *Marking that down for the future.

Expanded & plate steel for wall/window/door reinforcement
Pool chlorine tablets for sanitation - easier to store than liquid bleach.
I really really want a Mig welder or at the very least an arc/stick welder preSHTF. I got stuff to build.

I worry about my mother. Insulin dependant diabetic. Need I say more? That stuff has a definite shelf life.

sorry to sound stupid, but you can use pool chlorine like bleach?
my daughter also is on meds that have to be kept cold and has a shelf life. I do worry about 'scripts.

BBH, MEN mag once had an article about making shoes from tires. My dad did this for each of us kids and they were pretty tough to wear out! I think there may be plenty of tires for this sort of thing in this scenario, but our tires didn't all have those wires in them back in the old days.

Yes.... We had shoes made from tires..... :plbb

In the middle of such a scenario, I will probably be one of those folks who look around and say, "Daaaannnnnng! I forgot the __________ !"

I don't think one could ever fully be prepared for anything this catastrophic. I prepare for general living in this next year and I prepare my soul for the next world...but I don't have much to contribute to this thread. Sorry..... :(

This thread grew fast!

I do not want to debate 2012 much but I am a prophecy watcher and a science watcher. Many ideas seem to come together at this time.

We here have all been working on ss. When 2012 comes I will have a house that is about halfway built. Fortunately our little studio apartment over the garage is complete. So there is some worry about not having the house done.

Where science and prophecy cross it the prediction of great change in 2012. Many in the prophecy arena say many very different things. Those who expound on destruction have various degrees of distruction. If the worst happens then thats it. Nothing to worry about and nothing to prepare for

But if lessor happens there are things to be aware of and we have hashed this over time and again.... but in the science realm there is this prediction that the sun will be hit by this proton belt that they can see coming. They anticipate it will cause strong solar flairs, not like anything we have yet seen. In recent solar activity we have been made aware that solar flairs can knock out the grid and communications. It has happened and will happen it this solar activity as predicted happens.

I do think that it is wise to be prepared for this at the very least. It means that you will not have electricity and all the ammenitys that electicity brings. You will also not be able to communicate with those who live any distance. You will not have the benefits supplied to you from industries that use electricity to produce their goods.

So I am thinking about having sufficient gas and wood to keep going for a year at least. This will require us to up our capacity for propane storage. We have been using electricity to heat our pump room. This is essential in my mind but we could do it with propane. If the house is not complete we could put a wood stove in the garage below the studio where the pump room is. We could place a hand pump on the well but my DH just isn't into it.... perhaps I can convince him. I plan on having 8 cords of wood stashed come hell or highwater and what ever argument my husband may give me. That should keep our studio warm for 2 winters, one winter if we go to heating the garage with wood.

Again, it may be time to store some gasoling also. I really hate doing that but for emergencies we may need some.

Any idea how long gasoline lasts? Don't you have to add a stabilizer for longer periods? I see those elevated tanks for the farm for $100 and it is tempting to buy one.

It could, if it were bad enough and the items were connected to the grid. Although, it would be much more likely to effect more sensitive electronics, than DC motors and such. It would be likened to EMP (electro magnetic pulse) produced by a nuclear device. Most anything unprotected, that has transistors in it (and what doesn't, these days), would be at risk unless unplugged.

Edited to correct FFS (Fat Finger Syndrome)
