Hey everyone! I wanted to formally introduce myself, even though I've posted a few times. I'm already familiar with several of you through BYH and BYC. :D

My family (hubby, stepson-7 and stepdaughter-5) and I live in MD on an acre of land. We bought our house (our first house!) last May and are loving every minute of it. I grew up raising livestock in 4-H, and went on to major in Agriculture/Animal Science in college. I've worked on many farms and have worked with many animals including horses, pigs, sheep, beef cattle, and dairy cattle. Of course my dream would be to actually make a living on a farm, but right now that's not financially possible (who can afford land around here?!), so we're doing the small-scale homesteading thing. :D

We currently grow a garden for veggies, and though gardening is enjoyable to me, it's not my passion. We also have an Oberhasli dairy goat for milk, and a buck to breed to the doe. I also have 3 ewes right now. We have one Romney (Purl), one Southdown (Darla), and a Border Leicester/Southdown ewe lamb (Darla's lamb, currently not named). We have laying chickens (lost count), and we raise broilers for meat for us and our extended family. We also have around 12 turkeys for meat, and a few guineas for entertainment/bug eating. I'm interested in getting a couple pigs for meat next year, and would love to raise meat rabbits, but I can't do too much at once. ;)

Both hubby and I are very crafty/handy, and we make just about everything ourselves when possible. We like to re-use and recycle materials when possible.

So that's about all I can think of at the moment!! :D Oh, I also have a blog that I update pretty regularly. :D

Thanks everyone!!

And "farming" on small acreage is definitely more do-able than I once thought! I remember when we were looking for a house, I thought one acre would be too small! It's actually been great for now, because we can't really afford to do more than we're already doing. Of course I'd love to have more sheep and more pasture, but I don't really *need* more sheep at the moment.

There is a 1 acre lot for sale next to ours that used to be part of ours until our seller subdivided, and I've asked him about using that land as grazing space, but he declined because he thought it might deter buyers. :( We are also bordered by a large farm on the remaining sides, so we've also thought of possibly leasing an acre for pasture from him, but I haven't asked yet. I'm nervous.

Maybe you could offer to barter something in exchange for pasture access? That might make it easier.....just a thought. :)
