Lady H, after we went grain/gluten and legume free, my DD's long, heavy periods went from 5 days to 3. Now with only one heavy day, as opposed to 3 heavy days. It made a huge difference. (I myself never had any issues with periods, but after following the same diet, my period lasts 3 days not two...tops. We don't use homemade sanitary items (one step at a time here) so it saves us bunches.) :)

When I was preggo with #3, I had severely low hemoglobin and iron issues. My midwife suggested I take alfalfa supplements. They worked like a charm and my levels were normal in no time!

Hope you figure it all out.

B-6 can also be low on a vegetarian diet, and deficiency contributes to heavy periods.

Low Folic Acid can do so also.

Herbs for lightening the flow:

Chamomile - stimulates cramping which constricts the blood vessels. 1 cup of tea every 6 hours or so.

Red Raspberry - not sure how it works, but it reduces cramping AND reduces blood flow. 1 cup of tea every 4 hours or so, more if needed. Capsules also work.

Sage - reduces blood flow. Tea or capsules either one works, but the tea tastes pretty gross.

These are all things I have tried for very heavy flow, and all of them made a measurable difference.

She should also NOT be using tampons, they will double the flow.
I tried red raspberry leaves tea for the first time for heavy cramping period,,and it worked like a charm!! at least I think it was that,,I severaly sprained my knee at the same time, but all I was taking for that was ibuprofen, period went from 4-5 days of total misery to a couple hours of cramping and 3 days..hmmm,maybe it was the radiation from taking x-rays of my knee..lol
