Honestly since it is just you, I would put in raised beds. They are easier to work and easier to care for. The dump bark or gravel down on your walk ways.

As for the weed block fabric, I agree with enjoy the ride....the weeds will find a way.

If you do in ground or raised beds, you will need a good three or so years of DILIGENT weeding. Right now you have a ton of dormant seed in your soil....with the right mix of healthy soil, water and sun they ARE going to sprout. But in about 15 minutes a day you can keep even that sized area weed free if you make it a daily chore. After a couple years, the dormant seed will all have sprouted and been pulled and your weed population with start to diminish.

If you are going to do in ground beds I suggest you (and your OCD ways ;) ) Google Lasagna Gardening...and I don't mean tomatoes, basil and garlic! This will give you something to start on right away with minimal investment. You could do most of your planting areas this way and they should be ready for spring....maybe leave a small area out for a winter garden though.

If your soil is half way loose I really recommend a stirrup weeding hoe. You can week so fast and you just leave them where they lie after they are cut down but you do have to do it before things go to seed. It is my favorite garden tool!

This is the one I have! I use to hate weeding. Now it is fun. This model is really sharp.
