Mmmmmm...Lamb Chops!

It is always nicer when they give you a reason to send them off to freezer camp!

:fl for Purl!

Well, I dropped the boy off this morning. I go back and pick him up on Saturday though he'll be in different form. :p I teared up a bit as I drove away, but I know it was the right thing to do! I'll be sending his hide away to be tanned as soon as it's been salted enough! I can't wait to taste that first chop!

That's the funny thing. I kept him so long in order for him to breed my southdown ewe, Darla. He failed. So no babies for him.

I was getting ready for work this morning and heard Purl bleat through the baby monitor. I went out to check on her and she was squatting and pushing. I got excited for lambs until I looked at her rear end and saw a vaginal prolapse. :he I ran and got some warm soapy water and tied her up so I could try to push it back in. The prolapse was fairly big....about two or three times the size of a large grapefruit. :( I couldn't get it back in because she was pushing against me. So I put in an emergency call to the vet.

An hour and a half later :)barnie) the vet got here and we went to work. We put a dog carrier under Purl's stomach/hind end so her butt was higher than her head. That helped to tilt everything in the right direction. The vet gave her an epidural and was able to push the prolapse back in. Then he gave her a local and stitched up her vulva (a caslick stitch). :th Which made me cringe.

She's now out there wondering what the eff happened to her. Poor girl. I hope she lambs soon. I'm going to be on diligent lamb watch until she does, because I'm going to have to cut the stitch for her to be able to lamb, or she'll seriously tear her vulva.

Cross your fingers for us please! :)

Wow, I hope everything goes well. Sounds like quite a situation. will this affect her if bred again, or will it heal sufficiently so she can be bred again?

Well I'm not sure if it'll affect her in the future or not. It's possible. I've only dealt with one prolapse before, and that was on a 10 year old ewe. Plus it was very small compared to Purl's. Purl is only 3, so I really hope it won't be an issue in the future. I'm going to email her breeder and talk to them about it. :(

I'm going to keep an eye on this, in cae I ever have to deal with it. I did not breed my ewes this year, but the info might come in handy for me next year. I hope everything turns out well.
