I am just thinking out loud here ... I wonder if you put some foam rubber or cotton rugs or some other absorbent material on the roof of those hutches and then wet the down thoroughly if that would also evaporate and help keep the hutch cool??

Well it has been a day or 2!
I had my surgery on this past Tuesday 8/16. It went fabulous! I have had pretty much zero pain, have been active (nearly too much so) and have never appreciated having my own chickens so much! (eggs have lots of protein :D )
The nurses were constantly talking about how I was walking in the hospital - how far, how quick paced and how often. They talked about my "great attitude" and how me working out in the gym so hard the last few months had really paid off for me. Even one of the housekeeping staff that saw me both nights walking said "You are a strong woman" hehehe

Last Friday my friend K, that did the meatie chickens with me, gave me a nice big rabbit hutch. I put the 2 roommate dwarfs in there and they loved it. The house part is still closed off because of ants, but the cage part is still bigger than what they were in. The end of the wire cage is a big door that swings up so you can clean the cage, feed, get the rabbits etc. There is also a door on the house part rigged the same way except you can hook the latch to the other roof of the house so it stays up (I'll have to get a pic - this thing is a riot - pink and purple). The gate hooks are spring loaded so you have to pull back on them to hook / unhook the gates.

My surgery was at 730 Tuesday morning, so I had to be there at 530 to check in, meet the anesthesia team, etc. Monday night I had trouble sleeping - not because of the surgery, but being worried I had left something off of my dad's "chore list" for while I am out of whack. LOL. I finally gave up and got up around 3 to go ahead and feed up so he wouldn't have to come home from the hospital and still have that to deal with. When I shone the flashlight on the new rabbit cage I noticed immediately that my little Cheeto rabbit was gone. I hadn't opened the spring on the hook enough for the gate to latch and I guess he either leaned against the gate or bounced against it (this door is really pretty heavy! framed in 2x4). I looked and looked for him but of course didn't see him. So the only anxiety I had pre-surgery was if little Cheeto had stayed in my fenced in backyard, or ventured out into the big yard with dogs, cats and open areas making him bait for hawks.
And even if I could find him, I doubted I could catch him. Cheeto tolerates someone holding him, but he isn't a big fan of it.

Because of the anesthesia and various other drugs, I don't remember if it was Tuesday night or Wednesday night (I think Tuesday), but my mom called and said my dad had caught Cheeto! Evidently my dad saw the little guy over near the fence of the small chicken pen (where the other rabbit cage is) and just walked right up to him, scooped him up and put him back in the cage! I was elated!! YAY!! and I could NOT believe how easy it was to get him.... I guess he'd had enough excitement for one day. Cheeto and Oops (his roomie) adore each other, laying against each other, grooming each other, etc so maybe he was lonely ? I don't know but I just know I have him back and that is very cool!

Rio is doing great after his surgery. He spent the week at my vet to continue his "quiet rest". They are so awesome at my vet - they sent me flowers in the hospital but wrote the note as if they were from Rio. It was the talk of the nurses station, even my surgeon commented and said it was something just like what a Lab would do

thanks everyone!!
Yes, my vets and their staff are top notch in kindness and thoughtfulness (and medicine too ;) ). They LOVE Rio and absolutely adored my old Buford dog. In fact, they asked for a CD of photos that a professional photographer did (I have copyright release) and they printed ..I think 16x20s?.... a pic of Rio in the studio and Buford in a local park and they have them hanging in their newly decorated lobby. When they first showed me the pics I nearly cried.
