I gave them whole oats, a little bit of layer pellets and some scratch. I also pulled up a couple of big handfuls of grass from the garden (since they have wiped out every blade of oat grass that was in the run). They were still standing at the gate screaming when I left.

However! TSC to the rescue! We have only had a TSC for a month or 2 and I completely forgot about them. A guy at work said they are open until 8 on Sundays, so I will take an early lunch from work and go buy some feed for my poor neglected little franken-chickens

I really didn't doubt you, I just didn't plan on it happening TODAY. Note to self - never go into a weekend without an extra bag of feed for the meats!

hey baby! hows them meats? did they make it?

we LOVE TSC - well, we love that there is another feeds store option.. lets put it that way. half the time they only have half the stuff and most of their folks dont know anything about the products they sell. but when you get one good/knowledgeable employee they are like gold.

i like their dumor brand for chicks b/c its not medicated - until recently its been reasonably priced.

happy monday! if we dont hear from you'll we'll send out the dogs for fear your franken-chicken-piranhas got you!

:)

Whew! *wipes sweat from brow - literally* we made it!
I didn't get to TSC last night so I gave the screaming meaties some more oats, scratch and layer when I got home from work (130am). They didn't get much at all to eat provided to them yesterday ... I felt horrible.

Early this morning I went to my feedstore and they were out of my horse feed. I like this little local store because it's always the same folks and the older folks really know their stuff. I do get my chick feed at TSC though so I can get the Dumor.
Anyway I finally fed the poor neglected franken-chickens. I think I am glad I bought a 50lb bag instead of a 20!
They will be 5 weeks on Wednesday and there are some that are getting big!

My 7mth old layers think the meats are creepy too

Think the temp is supposed to reach 80 today, nights run in the low 60s... until Friday night of course, then it will be 33... until Sunday night of course when it will be back in the 50s. LOL welcome to Florida

ETA - I am feeding them the 20% Dumor with a small bag of 24% game bird mixed in... should I be feeding something different at this point?

Mine go nuts for cooked pumpkin and grass and dandelion leaves. The silly things refuse to eat corn. Or maybe they are smart things. They just want sprouted oats. Oh, they also love milk/yogurt/kefir added to anything else they are getting, whether it be the pumpkin or some leftover bread or white bread given to me.

I had another fly at my face today when I approached with the feed bucket! They are...um....nine weeks old? They are growing slower on the natural diet. And feistier. I find them to be much friendlier than my laying hens. Not as tasty, though, according to the hawk, who has reduced my layer chicks from 18 down to 9, as of yesterday. :/ In one month.

These did wipe out the oat grass I had growing in the pen, and they will eat whole oats or yard grass. I offered them pumpkin and they just pooped on it. They do run down bugs and such, so I was thinking of buying a bunch of bait crickets and turning them loose :p
I tried them on oatmeal when it was cold (my layers love warm, plain oatmeal) but nothing doing. I'd really like to give them other "treat" foods so I will try some yogurt and such. Just whole milk from the store, or should I get the fresh from the dairy (not raw)?

I googled kefir... but I am still not clear on what it is? :hide
