His current water bowl is raised.... on a cardboard box :D . It may need to be higher. I actually will be calling the vet tomorrow because his arthritis has been giving him fits despite getting his meds every 4-6 hours. We have him on minimal meds so there is room to help him more. Unfortunately some of his hind end trouble is now becoming neurological as well. :( He still eats and wanders around with me and Rio. He barks (from the comfort of his bed either in my room or on my folks covered back porch) when the other dogs bark. He loves to follow a fresh rabbit trail, and the night Rags killed a 'possum Buford acted like he was the one who did the deed. So he still has time, as long as he is happy I'll do what I can for him. It is really hard to see him getting so old though.

FF - Normally Poppy has a very loud, smooth "errr errr errrrrrr" crow.... this was "Ack errrk keeerrrrk". Zombies for sure.

Attacked Poppy? My parent's little pound mutt - he has a lot of terrier in him, the roo flew over the fence ... just a disaster waiting to happen. When we found Rags and Poppy in the front yard, Rio was sitting in his place on the top step of their backdoor, so no evidence to say he participated. He still rocks ;)

I don't know what your vet is having you do but we nursed a dog through severe neck arthritis and managed to extend her life. We used a combination of a medication called Metacam (once-a-day liquid) and an injection called Adequan. It helped her a lot. There is also new laser therapy for dogs with arthritis and they have gotten really good results with it. In addition, I've seen chiropractic treatment be extremely beneficial, as well as massage.

The laser was not invented in time for our dog, but the rest of these things were of tremendous help and we appreciated that it gave us extra time with her and gave her so much relief.

I hope my experience is helpful. It is so hard when they get older.

We have to be really particular about meds because of his kidneys. I took him in today but didn't see my regular vet. The one I saw doesn't impress me. She did give me a prescription for a new pain med. It is one my regular vet and I had talked about before, but the current med was working ok.
She didn't listen to his chest or check his mouth. She did palpate his abdomen (and he tooted on her  ). At any rate, I'll call my regular vet when she gets back later on this week.
(ETA - my regular vet did mention chiropractic and acupuncture at one time... I'll try to remember to ask her about it again)

Poppy crowed several times this morning, so his night stays in the bathroom are over. If it gets cold I'll put a lamp in the chicken house. He has lost inside privileges anyway by reminding me of why I was mad at him before the dog attack. He is beating up on poor Pat again. He charged her and she ducked down so he just flogged her as he went over. THEN one of my RIR hens attacked her and jumped on her like she was mounting her and just beat the dickens out of her until I got there to kick her away. Poor Pat hid behind me chirping and wheezing. I think there must be something wrong with her for them to hate her so much.

It is beautiful weather but I am having a very grumpy day. I did go buy another roll of chickenwire to finish my potatoes this week. I forgot to get more fertilizer to finish my peas so I need to get on that. The incubator seems to be holding a steady temp. I should be able to candle and see changes by Friday if the eggs are viable, huh? I set them Sunday?
Also , there are about 5 tomato seeds not sprouting - can I just put a new seed in that starter pot, or should I start a fresh one?

I am a supervisor at my job. I have a new team so during our intro's last week I told them I like to garden, mess with my chickens, etc.
A lady on my team brought me a jar of her Grandma's honey, some fig preserves, Pear jelly and pomegranant jelly. :drool
I told her I want her Grandma to adopt me!! She is bringing me cane syrup tomorrow! :woot

I'd love some of that honey and jelly!!!

I set my eggs last night in the incubator. I usually wait 5-7 days before candling too; it sounds like you'll hatch first and I'll follow - I can't wait to see little chick pics!

Good luck!

LOL I told Rio he has a lot to live up to, so he needs to be GOOD! He just wagged his tail and ran off with a stick of firewood :)

G - She is bringing me cane syrup this week (hopefully today!) and some pepper jelly. She said her Grandma is "crazy" and always canning and preserving :p

They are right, over on BYC - this incubator thing is addicting! Just in case these eggs don't candle well, I have been gathering fresh eggs, have them stored in a pantry and turn them a couple of times each day. Just in case. ;)
Of course, Poppy is back outside and back in action, so my luck I'll have a pen full of broodys come April
