I remember a month spent in the barn as a teen. Over a month and in March and APRIL to be exact and a cold year to boot. My favorite mare was to foal around April 1, so I started living in an adjoining stall around the 20th of March. Every night, all night, there I was in my sleeping bag. I was bound and determined NOT to miss a thing. Some nights I was COLD and miserable.
The mare foaled - AFTER carrying the foal three days short of a YEAR!! A whole month overdue for her first foal. After all of those miserable nights she foaled on May 1 at 4:00 in the afternoon on a nice sunshiny day in the pasture. She foaled with no problems at all.
We did get video and since I did not show up for our 4-H meeting on time the meeting came to us. There were 30+ visitors that saw the foal and pet and handled her right after she stood up. Talk about imprinting!
Still I remember lots of pleasant times in a night time barn.
