I guess that one's iffy to me. I believe that, yes, they SHOULD all be required to use the triangles, because they're on state and county roads, and it IS a safety issue, not only for them, but for other drivers. I understand where they are coming from though.

While I hate to agree with most things that limit religious freedoms, public safety on public roads shouldn't be held hostage to their religion. They already don't pay the taxes that maintain that road, should they be exempt from the laws that dictate good safety on those roads as well? Other sects of the Amish are complying and this one needs to also.

Ding, ding, ding! The roads by my dad's house are all ripped to hell from amish buggies, yet for some ungodly reason, they don't need to pay taxes to help repair those roads?! They use them just as much as we do, and they do way more damage to them, so I'm really not sure who had the bright idea that they shouldn't contribute to the repair of said roads. Also, since they don't pay sales taxes, they end up bringing home MUCH more money than the average non-amish. My sister used to work at the Snappy's and 8 year old boys had more money than she made. People even pay more for amish goods, and half of it isn't even amish made. But that's more of a rant that doesn't pertain to the subject I suppose.

Think they must have forgotten the verse in the Bible that says to Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's.

I'm all for religious freedom, but if they won't do what they can to make their buggies safe not only for their own families, but for others as well, then they should not be on busy streets and not at all after dark.

Just like they don't use electric but they CAN run a generator to opperate a freezer on their porch?? Or a briggs moter to operate a bailer for making hay?

"Religious Freedom" shouldn't imply....religious immunity to local, state and federal taxes. Buggy safety affects everyone, since they use public roads. Now, if they had a completely closed society, and never went off their own property, that would be different.

yea I don't see them winning this one only because it is public roads. and the reasoning is the reflective triangle is 'too flashy'. well that is exactly what is needed for early morning and later evening darker hard to see time. a flashy reflective sign to alert drivers. With that black back to their buggy truly anyone could ram one of those fast if it was hard to see at times.

edited to say, heck even nature gave critters reflective eyes and yea many times those eyes have saved me from making road pizza out of something crossing the road. :p

The amish around us that I see at walmart or thrift used vans.Buggies must be for very local travel. I think the marker is a good idea. How do the buggies damage the road? Seems like it would not do much if any damage.

Must be nice not to pay taxes.Ours just got increased....as they do almost yearly for something(schools, roads, elder facility, disability facility).
