Someone else got in touch with me.
Here is the link to what she is selling: http://baltimore.craigslist.org/hsh/3140660665.html
Fair price? I was considering offering her $30.00 for the whole lot, though she did mention that she has more, so I inquired as to what/how much she's got and waited to make her an offer.

Thanks guys!!

I personally don't think the prices are very good. I can buy new jars with lids and rings for that here. I just caught a sale on Ball jars at one of the stores and got several cases of pint jars for $8 a case. I'd want used jars to be cheaper. I don't know what prices are running in the stores where you are, though, so dealness of it may vary.

Kmart online has wide mouth pints for 9.99 regular and on sale 8.99 right now. http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_...0003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=011W111327110001

Ace has them for 9.99, free shipping to local store http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4418857&CAWELAID=109374306

ETA Was pointed out to me that you get Lids with the new jars so it's better.

Ditto that. For me, used canning jars need to be a couple of dollars or more, per case, less than new to even justify buying them. The new jars have bands AND lids for less than this person is asking.

I don't think it's a good deal either.

I agree, not a good deal. You can get the Mainstays brand canning jars at WalMart for about $7 a dozen with the bands and lids here. I dunno what your prices look like there, but they have to beat or at least equal those prices.

Does it concern anyone using the Mainstay brand that they are made in China? I assume Ball and the other old familiar brands are still made in the US, but don't know for a fact. I read some discussion about the Chinese canning jars having a higher breakage rate. I think it was on this forum a while back. I think I would pay nearly the same for used Ball as I would for new Chinese jars.

That was my gut hunch too. Here is her complete list:

Box (12) Pints
Box (12) Pints
Box (12) 12 oz Jelly Jars
Box (12) 12 oz Jelly Jars
(11) Quart Jars
(2) 12 oz Jelly Jars
(5) 1/2 Pint Jars
(29) Pint Jars

Pretty much all have bands. Some bands in better shape than others. Also a bunch of extra bands.

So that is a total of 4 dozen plus 5 pints, 2 dozen plus 2 jelly jars, 11 quarts and 2 half pints. So just over 6 or 7 dozen jars. So maybe $50.00 for the whole lot? It is going to be fairly easy to connect with her, so that is a good thing. The jelly jars are going to be really useful, that is something I don't have much of yet.

Ball and Kerr both say made in USA on the boxes. Around here a dozen is between $9.99-12.99 depending on size.

I use the Mainstays jars mainly for tomatoes and stuff that is WB canned. I haven't had any issues with them.

People used to say that about using mayonnaise jars in canning but my mother used to put up approx. 600+ qts a year, with some of those being the mayonnaise jars and never reported breakage of the cheaper jars....but many Ball and Kerr jars have broken and even exploded, causing her severe burns to her face and chest.
