Mom and grandma always canned up a ton of jam in the mayonnaise jars. I think there was some in the box of jars she gave me a while back. My great grandpa always canned pickled beans in them. I miss those beans, they were so good. I think he fermentation pickled.

I always buy the Ball and Kerr jars, but I don't shop Walmart. I prefer to try and shop the locally owned stores for as much as I can.

Ditto all the comments above about the price not being great--I can get used jars for between 29c - 41c each.

I wouldn't offer more than $5/case--most people are happy with that price :)

We don't have Ball jars here in Canada, but we used to have Kerr so I have lots of those. Our main brand is Bernardin, and we can also get Golden Harvest, both of which are made by Jarden Home Brands (the company that owns Ball and Kerr). I also have tons of 1940s-1980s GEM and Jewel jars with glass lids that were made by Dominion Glass/Domglas/Consumers Glass which was a Canadian company that went out of business back in 2002.

In addition to "real" canning jars, I also can in pasta sauce jars that are labeled Atlas Mason--they aren't actually made by the Hazel Atlas company anymore, but they are very sturdy and have gone through my canner a bunch of times. I get them from a friend who buys Classico pasta sauce. I've also canned in pizza sauce jars, I think they are Catelli brand--I get them from the same friend. Mayonnaise pretty much only comes in plastic jars these days, but I do buy mustard in glass jars--only they don't fit standard canning lids.

I just bought pints at the Dollar General for $7.50 per dozen. Regular mouth, Golden Harvest Mason jars, made in USA. They didn't have any wide mouth today. It wasn't a sale price, as far as I could tell.
