So the .com, .org, .anything means less than the keywords in your text?

yes, that is correct. The ending on your website is just a way for the internet to be a little more organized.

A blog would probably be useful to you for your purpose or organizing information for your book. I believe the blogger website will allow you to "tag" your posts, so that you can keep track of subjects easier by general subjects (you could have tags like canning, chickens, gardening, etc). Another part of what will get you "noticed" on the web is how active you are as a blogger, cross posting your information to Facebook and/or twitter, and networking with other really active blogs. Several of the bloggers that I read do things called "blog hops" and "Blogging bees' which are in essence sort of like the quilting bees of old - everyone gathers together and trades ideas.
I follow a number of different blogs now:
www.nourishingcook.com
www.blog.wellfedfamily.net
www.littlehouseinthesuburbs.com
www.frugalkiwi.com

The last two are really active ladies who do something similar to what you are doing. You might want to contact them and see if they'd be willing to offer a bit of advice. You can also look over their sites and see how they have things set up, and how they manage their content and such.

For myself, personally, I have kept a journal of my horse experience for the past several years. It helps me process things. Since I took a couple of learning trips that were supported by my family, I wanted my family to be able to read about what I was up to. So I purchased a domain name was that easier to get to than having www.a blog name/websiteaddress.com kind of thing. So I own www.ajourneyofbrainstorms.com as my blog website, and then I have it pointing to a free google sites page. Google has a website creator that is very simple, and works decently for me. I don't have the skills to really know how to make it really fancy, but it serves its purpose. A real blogging site will probably do better for you, and have more features that would help it look like a professional well done website.

I don't have all the technical skills to build a website through code, but I'm fairly tech savvy with the web. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to chat more.

If you stick to standard TLDs like a .com or .net or .org, you'll be fine. the subdomain in my example is my blog's name "sewingmissadventure" while the domain is "blogspot" with the TLD being "com". The free wordpress blogs are set up pretty much the same. Since Google bought Blogger and blogspot about 5 years ago, anything on a blogspot subdomain will be spidered unless you specifically make it private. Google.com is my #1 traffic source, with google.ca, google.co.uk, and google.co.in also in my top ten (just looked it up for this post). The others are all sites with deep links to specific posts on my blog.

Even when I had my own domains, the googlebot was on my pages within 24 hours of uploading them, and the blog that blew up thanks to the WP update security issue used to get crawled by all the SE spiders within 30 minutes of posting.

Here's the kicker: I never wrote for the spiders. I wrote for people to read, and THAT will make all the difference. You can get the #1 spot in your targeted keyphrase SERP, but if the page has no value it won't mean anything. On top of that, Google SERPs have a feature where users can tell the algo that the page is utter junk now.

If you write things people like, they will tell others, and those with blogs may link to your blog or to specific posts they like (or sometimes disagree with, but it still brings people to the source). The big thing is to get the ball rolling within the online community. People are very accustomed to blogspot subdomains, so that part is really irrelevant unless you just WANT to have your own domain.

:th And they ARE! Thank you all so kindly...the information you provided has been invaluable! I was a little confused as which would be better and I didn't want to spend money if I didn't need to do so.

So I don't really need to pay for a domain to get noticed, which was my most confusing point...and I'm much relieved. I'll probably blog on the site quite a bit as it will be my test site for this book. Should be interesting! :thumbsup

I've chosen Wordpress and, though I've created many a creative documents on my Printshop, I've found navigating the creation of this blog page a little more...difficult. My son has done a few, so I'm going to pick his brains on how to get it up and running. I'll post a link to it in my siggy when I get it looking the way I want and get a few blogs posted.

I paid the $30 per year so I can customize it a little more but am not real impressed with the "customizing" choices....

ETA: Wordpress is history and I'm asking for my money back....opted for Weebly and am VERY much pleased with the ease of use, the better options for creativeness and just everything that WP didn't have, they have it.

I use blogger.com as my base, but a friend hooked it up to a .com address so now I am www.morelcabincreations.com BUT manage my website from blogger.com. I can send you a link to a teaching video for blogger.com...it is very easy...go check mine out and see how you like it...
This only costs me $10 a year and I have my own .com address...don't ask me how he forwarded one to the other though, i have no idea
