Just got the September issue of National Geographic. The main story is "What's up with the weather?"

Thanks, ORChick. I haven't been here on the SS board so much, lately... sorry I didn't respond sooner.

I'd like to find that issue of National Geographic. When I see that mag, it's usually at some friend's house. I can't remembr if they sell it at the news stands up here, but maybe.

They never used to, but I've seen it in recent years--just depends if your shops carry it. Chapters/Coles/Indigo bookshops tend to carry it, and some of the local grocery stores do as well, so hopefully you can track down a copy or read it from a friend :)

I know that many people on this board have dealt this year with hotter-than-normal & dry conditions. Not the problem in my area, where we had an extended grey & rainy period (into July!). So I'm going to start a thread for those of us dealing with more wet, more humidity, more overcast, and cooler summer nights - and how that affects serious gardening. If that' happens to be your situation, please post on that thread.

Joel, over on TEG, there are some quite experienced gardeners in the North West, some in Idaho, etc, who have been having the kind of weather you are speaking of. You might want to pop in over there and ask specific questions. They are a friendly lot.

Here's a map sort of along the lines of what I was first asking about:
http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/noaa-release-unprecedented-mar/63833

It shows realities in very broad strokes only. And this map emphasizes March 2012.

It's interesting, but is small-scale and a little cartoonish in style.

My area is shown as fairly normal (just west of the Rockies), but the coastal zone is shown as cooler than normal. So it's a more-or-less kind of representation. Actually, among the details the map misses would be the fact that we've had more overcast, humidity, and rain and coolish summer eves. Very little real summer.
