Hi all! I'm writing from San Clemente in Orange County. We are trying to live as SS as possible, but as others have posted, it is a challenge in this area. We have six raised garden beds where we try to grow as much produce as possible, a compost pile, and 4 two week old chicks. We shop at the thrift stores as much as possible, and enjoy doing things that cost as little as possible, such as going to the beach, hiking, and camping. We have three small children and we are finding it challenging to raise them without materialistic values while living here. We have decided to homeschool to help in this area. We dream of living somewhere else such as Northern Cal. or back east, as we are both from New England. We would love to connect with like-minded people who live any where close!

Welcome to the forum. I am originally from HB and now live in North County. I understand exactly how you feel when it comes to going against the grain. It is possible to be SS and live in a "city". We all have learned there are many different levels to Self Sufficiency and which ever one you are on, it's the effort that counts. This forum is a great place to find information and ideas on how to be more SS. Hang around a while you will love it. G

Hey Tanks I am new here. My self sufficient lifestyle is FINALLY on it's way. Comfy place, Good well water, Gray water system, started on terra forming the HARD as heck soil in here east San Diego county foothills with an chicken tractored egg flock. Going to solar everything and looking into wind for more electricity and for a grist. Very happy to find a site where sustainability and recycling everything isn't considered WEIRD. Now, if I could just find a nice girl who would raise a few milk goats with me :)!

Hey Wolf and welcome, I think you'll have better luck with the goats than the girl. :gig

Congrats on the well water, I wish I had that. Solar and wind huh?? Let us know what you find.

Have a great day. g

Hello! I am in Torrance on a 5000 sq.ft lot but I use it the best I can. We have fruit trees; orange, lemon, 3 peaches, apricot and an avocado. Some are still too immature to bear, but they are getting there! I convinced the city to let me keep 3 hens, and all our garden beds in the backyard are filled year-round with veggies.

We do get great sales on local produce here, so I buy several boxes and bottle or freeze them. I usually get enough to last us a year.

excited about this new board!

Thanks, Gina.

We were rocking too, thankfully nothing even fell over. My kids were scared. That one on Sunday seemed to last a very long time. The one on Tue was short-by the time we realized what was going on and ran to our safe spot, it was over.

I am liking this site. Off to post on the homeschooling thread! My cousin lives in Vista, we'll get together for history club starting again next fall. Its a nice area.

BTW, its Tamlynn. lol. I almost didn't think you were referring to me. Blame my parents for never allowing nicknames.

I just moved back to the San Joaquin valley!
I'm looking to network with others in the area and in the Bay Area.
My interests are:
seeds and gardening
vermicomposting
rabbits
milk goats (I was planning on getting one or some, but need someone to board one/some)
leatherworking
food preservation

Let me know if you're interested in co-oping or something similar!

Finally, someone within 200 miles of me !!! I am in Visalia, 40 miles south of Fresno. The SJV is the agricultural heart of not only the United States, but the world. Or at least it WOULD be if we were allowed to have water.

Anyway, good to "meet" you. I live in town, on a busy street, but am doing my best to live self sufficiently. We can't have animals in town, but that's okay. I make up for it in other ways.

I'm in Hesperia, CA...or the High Desert of Southern California. We are working on being self sufficient while still having to commute "down the hill" for work.
