I agree with not letting the money stop you. Kids are a money PIT and this will just be the first of MANY MANY expenses....
My parents raised 6 children on less then 40K a year.
Its not that expensive ;)
The issue is with the fact that an adoption runs up to 20K per child :( It is literally the most expensive way to "have" children.
Althoug, its cheaper then all the fertility treatments we could put me through :rant
Because all 7 of my msc were not medically logged, I do not have "proven" history that is needed to obtain treatment.

This agency looks to be really good. The assistance is better then we have ever seen.

I believe the adoption tax credit is still available. Make sure you know the details of that to get back a lot of your expenses. Last I checked it was up to $10k.

Just make sure you understand what a tax credit is.

The government is NOT going to give you $10,000 back the year you adopt.

If you document expenses, up to $10,000 of them are able to be reported on your tax return the year that you adopt.

That money is subtracted from the TAXES YOU OWE. Any surplus remaining is carried over to the next year. It can be carried over for five years.

All it means is that it lessens the taxes you pay. It won't give you money back if you don't have taxes owed.

So it helps people with more money to a greater extent than it helps people with less money.

o_O hospitals are cheap up there, my managers pregnancy bills were $20k w/o the baby bill and w/ insurance! They charge you per MINUTE down here. She said next time shes waiting to go into the hospital.

Congrats on adoption!!

We have only paid in one time. Helps to be considered poverty stricken
Generally, I have never heard of anyone getting back more then $2,000.
Foster adoption is a fabulous route to go, because you get a lot of governmnet funding, but as I had mentioned before, OCS seems to not really care that we want to do it.
And from those that have dealt with them in this respect, they have said that they are not good to deal with.

Are you having Federal Withholding taking out of your paychecks?

If so, you could get some of that back due to the Adoption Tax Credit.

For a long time, we had so many kids that we did not have withholding taken out of our checks at all, and at the end of the year, owed nothing. Tax credits did us no good, because they only reduce what you owe.

That is really great. Girl we knew had a baby and didn't want it so her parents are raising it. They don't have custody though. She and her parents fight nonstop and she told dh if we wanted the little boy she would sign over custody to us. We had known her like a month and never met the boy. I was shocked. We knew her parents though and knew the boy was in good loving hands. Dh worked with her dad and they just live a couple of miles from us. Now she is pregnant again. My heart hurts for the unborn child and the little boy. Her father says he cries for her. Every once in a while she takes him for a night or two, then returns him. It doesn't make sense to me that adoption should be so expensive. It is not being rich that gives a child a good life. It is having people around it who love it no matter what. What shocked me about her is that she barely knew us and had never met our kids and she was willing to give up the child. We are not in a place to take in a child right now, but in that situation we would make a place.

Congrats!!!!!! :ya My good friend said the only thing she regrets is not adopting sooner. (They tried for 10 years to have a baby.)

She and her husband adopted two beautiful kiddos from a Russian orphanage. One is my daughter's best friend. Both kiddos were older, and had some issues, (they suffered issues from poor nutrition, night terrors, anger/emotional issues) but with two very loving, dedicated parents they worked through them as a family. The kids are a joy to have over any time...sweeties!

I'm sooo happy for you!! :hugs

We adopted through foster care so I'm very sorry you're having a bad experience with the department in your area. All of my babies came to me as babies-infants ARE available contrary to popular opinion and the best thing about adopting through the state is that you have resources available forever-like classes on adopting, classes on parenting, resources for psychiatric care if needed, medical expenses covered if necessary and expenses paid if you have some special need that you can't afford like braces or glasses or physical therapy or summer camps or .......
As for the adoption tax credit, it carries over for five years so if you can't claim all of it the first year or the next you can continue to draw on it for up to five years. We got almost all of it on all of our children.
