I hear you about unrolling hay bales! I used rotten ones which had been sitting in my field (for who knows how long) and they were a quite bit of a chore to unroll.

Yes...the rotten ones kept falling apart as I rolled or large chunks would come off one side and not the other. Hard to roll if they've rotted unevenly for sure.

We've been getting rain for many days now, so the nutrient flush from the gardens are really washing out into the lawn. Took a couple of pics of this...been noticing this happening ever since I started using wood chips on the garden beds. The only other place this happens at this time of year is over the septic leach bed!

You'll notice that the rest of the lawn and meadow is still winter brown...except right around the garden, the compost rings, the wood chip pile and directly around the house where I used wood chips on the flower beds. To me that speaks volumes about how much those composting materials of wood chips and now hay are constantly leaching nutrients when the vegetables are planted there each time it rains.

You really can't see it much, but this garden plot and the whole lawn/meadow is on a very slight grade, so the nutrients flow downward towards the house.

It makes a notable difference! If anyone doubts the benefits of this gardening method or thinks it may be more hassle than it's worth, the prove is right here that it is well worth it.

It does! Where you can see green up and beyond the garden is where I had put wood chips, leaves and hay under the peach trees and that leached downward as well. Compost layer on the soils of the garden and orchard....the gift that keeps on giving.

I can't help but see the irony here… People manicure their gardens and remove and either dispose off or burn "rubbish", which you are using to fertilise and feed your garden (with amazing results), while they buy fertilisers to feed their gardens… BTE gardening may not be possible for everyone, but compost heaps can be tucked away neatly in a corner somewhere?

I was so happy with the soil this year I made a video of it. Bte seems to have made a load of difference in just one year.
