I was thinking about earthworms myself when I read this thread earlier. They'll enjoy the richer soil for sure and improve it for you even more.

I think you said you have some creature eating the worms by you though? I'd be curious to see what happens if you start introducing some worms to the garden, just on a small scale for starters. You may have enough good topsoil by now to keep them happy. I find earthworms in my woodpile all the time, so they can't be too fussy! Gosh, I wish I could ship you a box full.

we have alot of gophers. I've started trapping them but haven't put a dent in the herd yet

Lot of gophers here too. The dogs dig caverns trying to get them.
