I have to add this story just for kicks and fun. My DH tells this story to everyone. Several years ago I came upon a grasshopper. One of those big dudes. I was bent over looking at it and going oh how cute. I reached down to touch it. It tried to bite me. No kidding the thing bowed up at me. In the time it takes to blink I grabbed my shoe off my foot and popped that grasshopper. Whoop. Dead grass hopper. I do the same thing with spiders. When one does not back down from my stare it gets whopped with my shoe. DH says I look like a ninja warrior when I pull that shoe off. He claims that I am so fast you can't see the action just the whoos sound and a blur of movment.

My words just before that happens are usually, "I will be your best friend if you will let me and your last enemy if you won't".

Completely off topic. Your Sig line says Wolf Feathers Farm.

Do you have a web page or blog somewhere?

Try using the spider webs to soak up the gasoline.
I did, but the first one I tried to use, this big ol' spidy come down the line and gave me the stink eyes. *shudder* So I ran to the house screaming.
Stink eyes? Ya'll are brave..I have NEVER been close enough to a spider to get "stink eyes".:hide What exactly do "stink eyes" look like?

I know that everyone is having a good laugh over your post, but, if you have a lot of spiders, the spiders are breeding because they have a really good food source. Maybe, it's time to house-clean the barn. :( MY barn gets full of cobwebs, too, and I do it in sections, so I don't get bummed-out and worn-out in the process. AND, these bugs that are feeding your spiders might be infesting your livestock, too.

I understand that. I think most of the bugs that the spiders live off of are moths and beetles. The security light is outside the main entrance to the barn and attracts all the nocturnal bugs and the spiders get those that stray into the shadows of the barn.

I thought about turning the light off, but it is a "security" light and it lights up the yard between the barn and the house. :/

As far as infecting the livestock, I'm not too worried about it because they are mostly moths and beetles. We have very little flies, only had a population the past two days because of the mud pit(currently taking care of that).

I'll take to knocking them down for now. The cold is coming, so it should knock them out. If not, I'll move the animals out of the barn and spray pesticide for a couple weeks in a row. It may not get rid of them, but it will then them out.
