That is the way to look at it....a lifestyle, a journey. Do as much as you can and learn as much as you can so you can make informed choices.

I think one of the best gifts you can give your children is the example of researching, learning, and being willing to struggle to make changes as a result. Being willing to push through the hard spots. Recognizing that it will get easier later, so put up with the discomfort now.

You go, girl!

My son took a health class of some sort back in 10th grade and they went over all the strange ingredient stuff on labels. I wish schools would do this more often as it made an impact on him greater than all my "nagging"

Of the two boys he's the most cautious now.

Last night I was making a quick run to the store and asked if anyone needed anything. DD6 said 'we need Honey Nut Cheerios!'

So while at the store I looked for a better option and found "Honey Bunnies" whole grain cereal with only 8 ingredients, all things that I can pronounce and recognize... and the first ingredient is whole oat flour.

She was quite put out when I returned home with out the HN cheerios. ...although she did happily munch a bowl of Honey Bunnies instead. :smack

I posted in my own journal but wanted to thank you here for inspiring me to make some changes in what my own son eats. He's very particular about the veggies he'll eat. About the only thing he'll eat raw is carrots. Well, I would much rather eat a salad of all kinds of raw vegetables in the summer than cook vegetables so I started putting salad on his plate and just telling him, tough, it's healthy, you need to eat it. He whined once. We ignored him. Finally he just ate the darn salad. It was only a few mouthfuls. The next night it was a little bigger with more "exotic" greens and red pepper. Son of a gun if he didn't discover he LIKES red peppers!! What's next, tomatoes????
I did create a small problem though. I had net my blueberry bush to keep the catbirds from eating the berries as soon as the ripened. It doesn't stop DS though! I caught him taking ripe berries off the bush and eating them! You have to understand this would not have happened last year! Or last month!

Great news Henrietta!

Trust me, I do understand! I have really seen the light!

I used to buy turkey lunch meat (processed, yes) and it would go bad...everyone would whine, I don't like sandwiches :smack Well guess what? Now that there is no crappy snack food in the house, the lunch meat and WW bread is vanishing quickly because they are actually EATING!!!
Fruit, yogurt, raw nuts....no more fritos, doritos and pop tarts!
I do need to work on the salad thing though.

I need to work on the nuts. He'll only eat peanut butter. I did make a salad and I glazed some pecans to sprinkle on top. He loved those!! Now to get him to eat some without the sugar and salt.
We're getting there!

If you can get the kids involved in planting their own salad garden, they will suddenly become very interested in eating salads, once the goodies are big enough to eat! The earthbox or earth-bucket project makes it extra fun and interesting, too.

Yay for all you good moms!!!! :ya :thumbsup :celebrate :clap :bow

Thanks Free! He has helped me plant salad veggies in past years. In his case it didn't do any good. Not that I want to discourage Dace from trying it! He did admit that our homegrown carrots were tastier than store bought!

Good job Henrietta!

I do the salad thing too. When she was younger I would tell her we were at a fancy resturaunt where the salads came out first. Then I would tell her that the waitress (me) couldn't bring out the main course until she saw empty plates...her boss wouldn't let her. She knew it was a game but loved those silly pretend games so she played along. :p

BTW, Santa Claus only brought toys that were made by elves...wooden or handmade looking toys. One time I bought a corn cob pipe from wallgreens and left it near the tree. I sprinkled it with a tiny bit of glitter too. OMG you should have seen the look on her face as a 5 year old. (We just read The Night Before Christmas for her bedtime book.) Then we "mailed" the pipe back to Santa. I still have it to give to her when she has children of her own.
