One thing extremely nice about owning a piece of land for awhile BEFORE you build is that you can really get to know that land. Where do the best breezes blow, where are the wet spots, which place warms up first in spring and where does the frost first fall etc..
All of that knowledge can really help you get the most out of your place. For example those fruit trees should be planted where it LAST warms up in the Spring. Sounds odd but it will keep them dormant longer and prevent any fruit losses from late frosts.
We are debating - DH wants earth-berm, but I'm not too crazy about how those look. I would like a passive solar house. We are going small because it's just the 2 of us - I'm thinking maybe 1000 sq feet. I have 3 things on my "dream house" list - open living space (kit/living room/dining room), screened in porch, and 1 1/2 bath. I think it would be very cool to have a loft-bedroom, but that's not a must-have. I'd also like to keep the trailer & spruce it up a bit for a "guest house."
We looked at this land over a year ago, before we knew the owner would sell, and I've been dreaming of it ever since. It's kind of hard to believe it's ours!
There is an earth bermed home in Scottsburg that looks rather nice. I am drawing a blank on the exact location, but you can see it from the highway.
On the open area: If you aren't going to have a dishwasher in which to stash them, you may want to try to arrange it in such a way that you don't have to look at dirty dishes. (Maybe that wouldn't bother you - we all have little things that drive us crazy!)
Our builder couldn't believe that we did not want a dishwasher. He put the wiring in the cabinet next to the sink so it would be ready 'when we changed our minds".
I've been looking up passive solar house plans online, just to start thinking. I'm surprised that a) some of them are soooo big! and b) a lot of them have ridiculously big master suites with ginormous walk-in closets and the bathroom with the massive whirlpool tub. Kind of seems like you will lose some of the impact of passive solar if you to heat all that space....
hoosier - Having only had a dishwasher one short year, that is actually one modern convenience I would LOVE to have!
We looked at a lot of passive solar plans too. We couldn't believe how big they were either. We thought 1500sq ft would be our max. We just didn't want to pay to heat and cool and clean all that space and so much of it seems wasted.
One thing I would recommend with the trailer is to have an electrician and a plumber look it over and make sure both of those are alright before anyone lives in it.
