I inherited my nut cracker from my grandfather, who live in MO for many years. I like it, but there are probably many other models that would work just fine.

You know that the nuts are ready when the hull is firm but you can slightly dent it with your thumb. Generally, if they're falling off the tree, they're ready. If they're ripe but haven't fallen, you're probably out of luck because these trees grow really tall :)

any suggestions???? been unsuccefull in my attempts so far to purchase a cracker..... we are having strong winds from hurricane isaac here in MISSISSIpi, so some of them are falling.... ill see if they can be dented with my thumb... cant wait to eat one!

If you have strong hands a water pump plyers works.huge vice grips work better. About the handyist is an old wood vise where you tighten down with just a twist. Remember you want to crack not chrush the inner shell.

an old timer told me a pretty basic way..... get the nut and wrap it in a cloth, preferably w/ on its side (so the peices dont go everywhere) hit it with a hammer once or twice... use tweezer to get meat out.... worked for me.. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheaper too
