I have a question I was told my black walnuts had to sit in the garage for 4 months before you open them. Is that true? or can you just pick them up and bust them open?
Thank you
Brian
Used to be old fellas that would come around to the houses pulling a walnut huller and hull all your walnuts for you for a price. You can inquire with the local extension office and see if anyone is doing this in your area. Our FFA used to do it.
If you have animals, save your green hulls to dry, powder them and mix into their feed. A very powerful, natural de-wormer!
Well I am not sue on the 4 months, but I we pick them up in the fall and take them and have them hulled (green out hull removed) and then put them in the garage until about December or so and let them dry. Dad also says this helps the nut meats to cure. I know that a nut meat right out of the hulled shell tastes green to me. So when we crack the first few, I taste the meat and if it tastes green I let them sit about another month.
