He looks like a real pro! Can you afford to pay him what he's worth?

Keep working at letting him think its "fun". Our oldest lasted two years, now its a "chore". :p Luckily, I have two more coming up who want the chance to mow!

:D We did count it toward his "weekly chores" but I think he would do it for free, he really likes mowing! Hopefully, it stays fun for him. But, we do have backup. His younger brother is pretty jealous, and is patiently waiting for his chance to mow...

Too funny!

We have a reel mower, and 15-yo and 14-yo daughters to run it--they don't mind too much but they are getting to the point where they remember whose "turn" it is to mow ;)

I saw a reel mower at a garage sale and I thought about picking it up, but they wanted a lot for it and I didn't have the extra money. It seems like it would be nice to one have for some of the smaller spots the rider can't reach, and for backup just in case. I don't think the kids would like that one as much as the rider though. We had one when I was younger, and I seem to remember it being pretty hard to push. You had to get a good running start.

I had a good first day of summer vacation with the kids on Friday. We went to the library, cleaned up the house, and then we went fishing. I'm the only one who caught anything, though I use the word "caught" loosely. I actually managed to somehow hook a small northern on it's side. My bobber was bouncing around, so I jerked on the line, and somehow snagged it on the side, under it's fin; then it thrashed around and tangled itself up in the line. Too bad it was so little, and I don't really care for the taste of northern--a little too muddy tasting to me. But the kids had fun even if they didn't catch anything.

Saturday morning I took the kids for a nature walk at a woods near our home, and then I came home and did some garden work. I found some flowering kale on sale at a local greenhouse, 72 cents per 3-pack. So I got a couple 3-packs. I don't know if I even like kale, but it looks neat, so what the heck, I'll give it a try.

Sunday something sad happened. Our cats are excellent mousers, which I normally appreciate. But there are some baby rabbits living near our house somewhere, and they caught one and killed it. Poor little thing. :( I wish I could train them to get only the mice and leave the birds and baby bunnies alone.

I'm really wishing it would rain already! It's been a dry June, and we're all out of the rain water we've been saving, which means using the hose, which means a bigger water bill. :tongue No chance of rain til the middle of this week though, and I've got baby plants sprouting up that I need to keep moist.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I had never really eaten kale (my mom never cooked it, so I never really tried) and we got some for free the other day so I cooked it in a soup. It was awesome! Now I'll probably buy it and grow it as well, it was really good, not hard to like.

The more you garden, the more you will get over being sad about the cat eating a baby rabbit.

I have planted my peas three times now. Stupid rabbits think I am planting it just for them!! I could eat a baby rabbit myself about now. :somad

I know, I suppose you are right. We haven't had anything eaten in our garden so far, but I can definately imagine how frustrating that would be! And you always hear that saying "they multiply like rabbits" so I'm sure the cats aren't obliterating the rabbit population or anything. They're just so darn cute! My husband always says I'm a "bleeding heart" when it comes to animals.

So far we have been lucky living out in the middle of vacant farm land. No rabbits. Our veggies will be ok till the deer find them. Unfortunately the mice killed the fruit trees (that were not killed by the deer the previous winter) this winter. We are going to have to replant 8 trees (this time we are going to use tree wrap on them to keep the mice away); we already deer proofed them after they killed the original trees we planted.
