What I don't get is people who get their houses destroyed by hurricanes/tornadoes, and then instead of going to find some more sane place to live, rebuild in the exact same spot. :p
My intent of the thread was not so much related to living in CA, but rather at the latest scary scenario dreamed up by "scientists". These types of things are usually associated with the idea that they, the scientists, should be given grant money to study the problem.

However, if you look at the number of disasters that have befallen CA residents over the years, and the fact that they rebuilt in exactly the same spot, how does this support your idea of CA being some type of ideal paradise? I'm not saying that it is a bad place to live, quite the contrary, but it does have its' associated risks like any other place on earth. People continue to rebuild where they feel it is their home.

Well of course it *could* be. The $60,000 question is WILL it be this year? Answer, wait and find out but probably not :p

Anyhow, these things usually mutate considerably between the original science and the media coverage, ya know.... and reading this forum one might equally well ask "what will NONscientists dream up next, doomwise?" ;)

That was great Pat.

LOL

My year in California saw constant watches for fires (I lived in the mountains) and the concern of being cut off by a mudslide or rock slide (only one road in and out).

I did experience one pretty fair earthquake there, which didn't even feel like the ground shaking. I had no idea what it was. I was sitting up working on my computer and I actually wondered if a bear had climbed a tree and jumped onto the roof. That's what a felt ... a big boom and it seemed like something hit the roof. Only next morning did I learn it was a pretty good earthquake.

Still ... I've spent years living on the coast and gone through plenty of hurricanes. Even though the earthquake was nothing, I'll still take the hurricanes. Like someone said, at least you know they're coming. You know what to expect, and when, and how much. And yes, I was caught in a flood once during a freak hurricane.

What I DON'T like are tornadoes. I grew up in some VERY tornado-prone places. Sometimes they come with no warning, are on you quickly, and people do die in them, through not doing anything stupid. (Most hurricane deaths are refusal to evacuate or people actually surfing during the storm or doing other things they shouldn't.)

I guess it really all boils down to where seems like home. Right now I am under "threat" of tornadoes ... my least favorite. It's close to home though, and I have a place to live. At least it's a low brick house with a concrete foundation and not a mobile home. Best I can do.

Every place, as far as I can figure, has natural disasters of some kind or another.

And yes, the scientists blow things ALL out of proportion and/or the media prints some pretty sensational headlines. Can't believe half the news, at least. ;)

I've lived here all 38yrs of my life and I'll take a hurricane over the disasters other states face any day!! I sat out on the porch for Ivan (BAD one) and in the barn for Dennis (eh...not so bad).

And we dont' have a threat of a stinking winter superstorm either ;) :D

I've been in 3 (admittedly small) earthquakes...the first time I thought it was a big truck rumbling by...the last time I thought a plane had crashed near the house!! (Really, BOOOOM!!) I'll admit, a bear never occurred to me. ;)

But tornados scare the be-jeezus outa me!!! :hide

Sounds kinda funny, huh? But seriously ... we had bears CRAWLING over the mountain, and I couldn't imagine anything else making that kind of noise. I mean ... a 400 pound squirrel?

I was afraid to go outside and look. In case it WAS a bear. ;)

We had an earthquake a few years back,..yes,.. in WV. It sounded like a sonic boom and that was it. It scared the crap out of me,..but in my defense I was sound asleep when it happened :D I thought a plane crashed or something! The worst of our natural disasters here are flooding and snowstorms,...we are always prepared. Flooding we don't worry about so much,..if it floods here someone had better be building an arc! It may keep us from getting anywhere for a few days,..but thats okay,.I like being at home! No tornados here where we are,..too many mountains I guess. Have seen them hanging from the sky,..but never touched down. Very cool to watch! With everything that goes on elsewhere,..I'll stick with it here,..in the mountains. :D
