BB is right. You do not need to import dirt. Get on Freecycle and see if you can get some of those materials. Also look up "Ruth Stout". Apparently I have been following her methods off and on for years :p

yep, craigslist is great for all kinds of freebies.

Here we get a trailer load of dirt for as little as ten dollars at the place that sales it by the dump truck. We just bring our own trailer and they dump two or three big scoops from the CAT and we take it home. We have tons of dirt for very little money. You might call and see what they charge if you pick it up yourself. Sooooo much cheaper.

Oh! And I forgot... :hugs about the kids thing. I wanted more. Hubby said noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! LOL

Both have to be on board for that and the NO wins in that argument. Now that I am 47, I am so glad I listened to hubby!!

As for the money.... :hugs again. I am right there with you bud.

this has nothing to do with lack of money

money is literally prioritize what is most important....and teeth are important so screw the potatoes LOL

you have a major life crisis in the making.

your SO and kids...this is the big elephant on your back and how you feel about it will affect your future. You just haven't come to terms yet with what is happenig. You will................

QUOTE: But, it doesn't matter because it's something that is never going to happen. *sigh************

it does matter to you.........take your time and think...nothing has to be decided tomorrow. but honestly if you don't live your life, then you might live a life of depression, resentment, loathing, emptiness, etc.

Hope it all works out best for you!!
I know, and I think here soon we are going to sit down and have a serious talk about our future together, what we both envision for ourselves and our family, and find ways to compromise and make both of our dreams bear fruit. And your right, I resent well, very very well, so it is definitly something I need to get resolved.

FYI, you do not, and I repeat, you do not need dirt to plant a garden.
Get on your local Craigs list, print up flyers and post them, asking for the following items.
Note that you will do the picking up.

Cardboard
Newspaper
leaves
grass clippings
Old hay and straw bales
Manure

While you await the answers, bone up on lasagna beds and permaculture.

Layer as follows.
Cardboard and newspaper
Manure (can be hot and fresh at this layer)
then repeated layers of the rest of your organic materials.
Put a bit of dirt on top, regardless of its quality.

For potatoes, just put down a layer of cardboard, then plenty of leaves, hay and straw.
Plant taters in that, and keep adding mulch as they grow.
Your right as well. For potatoes all i really need is to grab a bag that I like from CJ's store, since they are all organic and stuff, I know they should grow if I let them because they don't allow irradiated food into the stores. And I keep forgetting about craigslist and freecycle, or rather not forgetting so much as continually running into this hangup over asking for help. I do it, and I'm ok with it, but sometimes it feels like I'm asking for too much help, or begging. But, I need to let that go as well.

I have manure you can come and get....although I'm a little far away!

You are right - things will get better once you get past the low point.

ETA - This was the toast I ended my speech with at my sister's wedding. I recite it to myself whenever I'm feeling like we're going through those up and downs:

Separately, you are two special, remarkable people, but together you are complete. As you sit side by side through this roller coaster of life, remember to scream from the peaks, hold hands through the dips, laugh through the loop the loops, and enjoy every twist and turn.
Thats a very nice toast there. Also made me tear just a little bit more. And thanks for the offer on the manure :)

This I will do. Ruth Stout eh? Also, how do you house your ducks? At some point mine will be going from the brooder to their own coop and I know they don't need a roost (do they?) but do they just sleep on the ground?

The problem is that we don't own trucks, or even a trailer. My inlaws have a truck, but it's barely running, and they don't like having anyone else use it. So, I have to rent a truck from somewhere, either home depot, or a car rental place, and thats also not cheap. I see dirt, manure, compost listed all the time on craigslist, alot of it for free, and it just galls me that I can't get any of it.

Thank you, all of you. I really do appreciate the happiness thoughts. Here's some pics of our newborns :)

A Rubbermaid tub in the back of the car works for hauling poo.

We do have empties, and we can use the ones we use for the chicken feed whenver those are empty, just go grab some from someone whenever we are running that direction anyways. I could care less if my car smells like poo :D

:D not a problem. I have used this route before.
3 years in, and we have finally found a friend with a trucking company that will deliver 20 yards of black barn dirt that is being given to us, for a very low fee.
You have to start somewhere, and things will get better and better with time.
