I noted spring yesterday, too! My lilacs have buds and some bulbs are popping up. I couldn't tell with the snow covering it, but spring is coming once it melts! We have red alder and it gets a rosy hue in the spring and it is starting to look that way. The last few days it has been too warm for the woodstove but too cold without it. I'm not complaining however!

I do still have some frozen ground in a couple of shaded places, but the perennials and herbs are in direct sun. That is where I am seeing green. On the way to the duck pen this morning I also saw some clover sprouts. That means the ducks have to stay locked up in their run until it gets established. Otherwise they will eat all the sprouts and tear up that part of the lawn.

I am going to plant quinoa and carrots this weekend. Since the quinoa seeds are so tiny they recommend you mix them with carrot seeds for better distribution plus you get 2 crop in the same space.

Got the tomato seeds planted indoors and now I need to plant peppers.
your planting the carrots and quinoa outside? are you using a cold box? if your planting i really need to get in gear, aren't you colder than us or are we colder than you? :D

Spring? What is this Spring that you talk about?
We got 2 inches of white fluffy overnight, and 6 more inches on the way.

Do you know why sex is like snow?

You never know how many inches you're going to get or how long it will last.

AMEN! :D

I have a frost blanket. They have them at Sam's for $8 and some change. I planted Jersey Cabbage and carrots a few days ago and that has the frost blanket on it too. I also planted some melons with my red neck wall-o-water set up.

Even without the frost blanket, NOW is when you start to planting snow peas, asian greens, lettuces, etc... If you wait too much longer, they will just bolt once it gets hot and you wont get much of a crop.

Most asian greens can tolerate light frost with no issue.

Did I give you some mini bok choy seeds when we met in Denver? If so plant those now :D

As for our climates, I am in a valley. Our altitude is 5500 ft. It's a bit of a microclimate. I think I am slightly warmer than many areas of the Springs.

Even if you aren't wanting to brave planting outside yet, you should be starting tomatoes and peppers inside.

Yeah, i would, except when we started them inside last year at this time we lost most of them because we planted them outside before the last frost - around here it's the endish of may.

I think you did, and I have a half wiskey barrel that I'm going to try them in, see if that works :D And I know we have enough empty milk jugs and 2 liter sodas to put together our own redneck wall o water :)

these are from bulbs that CJ planted years ago, and come up year after year :)
They are right under our bedroom window, on the south wall, so plenty of sun exposure! :)

Yeah! That's it :D

You can really see the day lily plants today. I actually smelled the chives before I saw them. Just waiting to see if the oregano and sage made it.

We hit 60 degrees right now! It is spring!

My animals are almost bursting with joy, romping around in the sunshine after all our snow, rain and cold temps.
