we had a barter arrangement with a local beautician. She came out once a month to our house and cut everyone's hair (that was 5 people), and in exchange we would give her one of our pigs in the fall when they were ready for butchering. Everyone was happy. I especially appreciated not having to go into town.

I hear you, Leta - I end up with the wedge-head look too ;) Youtube has some great videos on cutting your own hair. My favorite was one where a woman tipped her head down, brushed her hair and put it in a pony tail on top of her head, worked the rubberband down until it was where she wanted it, then cut it. I tried it once and did an okay job. Worth trying again. At least if your hair is still long you can put it back until your cut grows out!

I'm in the 'look like crap for free' group, too. Some of the worst cuts I ever had were from professionals...and occasionally me!

I was lucky. My SIL was a stylist years ago. We were broke, right before school pictures, so I called for help. She cut my son's hair, showed me how to layer and do a basic cut. Now, 30 years later, I still cut mine, a friend's hair and DH. I had a regular 'client' list of 7 outside of the family plus our family of 5 for a lot of years. Got to be a pain as they were all free. One elderly friend that lived out of town always sent home a cake or something when I gave her a perm and a trim every three months like clockwork.

Best one was the guy that did our taxes! I cut his hair throughout the year, he did our taxes and we both thought we had the better end of the deal. They moved three or four years later, dang it.

That's crazy about the Flowbee! I was just talking to DH about them the other day. Sure would make it easier to get an even cut on the back of my own short-ish hair.

cutting my own hair is something I would not try because I like to have it cut in a style. no way I could do that LOL I truly like looking good so taking my own hand to my hair would be a nightmare LOL

Flowbe --my friend owns this from long ago and does her hubby--he looks OK :p

I'm going to try the pony tail thing. I struggle with the back. I can do face framing layers no problem (well, now that I've had some practice) because I can *see what I'm doing*. It's the layers in the back that make me cuss.

I cut DH & the boys hair and trim my own bangs, but for the rest I just go to the cheap walk in place. I keep my hair short and off my neck in the summer but let it grow from fall to spring and then maintain it short again all summer until it's not hot anymore. Probably ends up being 4 cuts a year at $12 after tip (or less if I manage to catch their $6 hair cut deal) i used to exchange cuts with my sister but she isn't very good at it, lol.

Robocut is another brand. I've used mine for 3 years and like it a lot.
