Just like most of the rest of the country, at least the upper Midwest and our friends to the north, it is cold here. Single digits last night and the waterer that is not on a heated base froze even though we had a heat lamp practically sitting on top of it.

The chickens seem to be doing OK although there are signs of frostbite on some of the roosters' combs. Some of the chickens don't want both feet on the ground so they will stand on one leg. The cats are the same.

The pond is iced over.

Even though she stove is keeping the house pretty warm some of the rooms are noticeably cooler and the baseboard heat has kicked on in them.

Right now supper in the form of soup made from mostly from leftovers is cooking on top of the wood burner.

Tomorrow it is supposed to get above freezing. More wood cutting ahead.

I hope that above freezing comes our way, dac, as I am totally frozen up here and have no water...old farm house with no insulation on the pipes, you know.

Funny...my landlord stopped by the other day and gave us 5 lengths of the foam pipe insulation and said to crawl under the house and put them on the pipes. I love the guy but he's not much for house maintenance! :p He seems to forget that they had to cut holes in the floors to access the pipes the last time he let them freeze~right before I moved in last year. Should have insulated then, but some folks aren't real thinkers.

You would think if a fella didn't winterize his house one winter when it was unoccupied, the pipes burst and ran his well dry at the thaw, burned out his pump and caused $1200 worth of damage and repair~that he would try to make sure it didn't happen again!

sorry Dacs for your tough weather. so many are getting nailed.

we have 2 days of bad....low of 10 and 14 tomorrow and sunday. but that is nothing compared to some others out there.

then for us back into the 20s and 30s at night which is fine really.

I am lucky being in the south....so far so good. Possible mix sleet/snow/ice and whatever on sunday but I doubt it will happen.

I've been dealing with some negative 20 weather this week. It was so cold Thursday, my car wouldn't start. I borrowed my husband's car to get to work. To be nice, I filled it up on the way home. It was so cold pumping gas, I was practically crying. Reminds me of Alaska all over again. Its supposed to get up to (positive) 20 tomorrow though. Its amazing seeing 40 degree changes in the course of a couple days. Could you imaging going from 40 to 80 in two days?

Yes, Yes I can.

Our weather here is like that often. It's a pretty common thing. In fact that usually happens to us in one day. We will have to wear heavy coats to keep warm, then later in the day need only short sleeved shirts...or hot to start off with and super cold at mid afternoon. It's a pain in the butt to dress the kids for our weather here. Didn't realize how much of a pain in the butt until I had lived in a place that had a steady climate. I really feel for you guys that are getting hit with the negative double digits. It was 9 degrees last night. It was a day in Hawaii compared to what you folks in the north are going through!

In Alaska we also had engine block and battery heaters. Might be something you want to get for your car.

We also dressed for the cold, not just for a bus ride and to work inside.

You ARE green, Oscar! Maybe she thinks you would taste good? Maybe she is going organic and grass fed? Who knows? Maybe she just likes messing up your hair?
