This is a bit embarrassing. This time of year my head is so itchy.I've read tons of remedies for dandruff. But, does anyone have one that actually worked for them?
I don't know if this matters or not? But, I use baking soda to wash my hair and i rinse with vinegar. And that is really the only thing I do to my hair. I don't use styling products or blow dry it. I guess I should also add that this has only been my routine for the past 6 months or so. But, I've had scalp issues in the winter time forever.

My scalp does it a lot because I only wash my hair weekly and my skin dries and flakes all the time. It's worse in the winter because it is more dry.

I just brush it well so the skin chunks don't show LOL.

I don't think it's gross at all. *shrugs* All your skin does it. It's just that your hair holds it from falling off so easily.

Unless you wash your hair so often that the skin doesn't have time to accumulate, I think you just have flakes. I'm not sure when it became such a bad thing because frequent hair washing is a new fangled concept LOL. Then again, so is the fact that most people cannot grow their hair long. :p

If it bugs you, I'd say brush more to get all the loose skin off your scalp and out of your hair. Massage your scalp to loosen the skin off and then a really good brushing :)

You can do an oil treatment before washing for extra moisture, I bet.

I'll be watching this one - I have dandruff that nearly disappears in the summer, and is horrendous in the winter. It's always been this way (I'm talking since like 4th grade) no matter how short or long my hair has been, complete with anywhere from everyday to once-a-week hair washes depending on the length.

Glad I'm not the only one. :) I'll try brushing my scalp more. The flakiness doesn't bother me as much as the itching. It just about makes me crazy. I have tried using olive oil and coconut oil on my scalp in the past but, it only relieved the itching for a day and it was really hard to rinseout.

Yep! LOL. I'll scratch the heck out of it and then comb out all the tangles I put in and get the dead skin brushed out LOL.

I'm in Colorado. New folk here get scales >.>

I always thought it was partly living here. But I've never been bothered by most things like that. It horrifies my sister and mom LOL

Alright, well I guess I'm going to be doing some experimenting.

So far...
I tried massaging my head with dried rosemary. Refreshing. Yet, still itchy.
I tried using a rosemary infusion in my rinse water. Boy said I smelled "herbal". But, I'm still itchy.
I tried brushing my hair a lot. Especially my scalp. It made my hair turn greasy quickly. Stupid grease filled head. :p And....still itchy.

I'll keep on trying.

Been readig a bit, as I have the itchy and flaky, no matter what I do as well.
Lack of B vitamins seems to be implicated.
Its hard to suppliment properly though with pills.
And Oysters are spendy, plus they have to be eaten raw to really work.
 This will take some more research to figure out.

ETA Low zinc is a problem too!
more stuff to buy, lol!

My first thought was - ACV ... but you do that.

And then - rosemary ... but you do that.

So all I can suggest is that maybe you are washing your hair too often? Are you shampooing when you think you should (because society, or your mother, said so?) or are you waiting till you really need to? As Abi has said, washing our hair every day (or so) is a very modern concept. I wash mine every 5-6 days - but it is long, and not fine, and worn up or braided mostly. My Dear Friend has always had very fine hair, and washes every day, and needs to. If you can you might try to stretch out the time between washings.

That is because the condition of your skin has A LOT to do with your vitamin D status. My skin used to crack and split so bad it would bleed. I have big cracks in my heels from old damage, but they are now nice and smooth (other than the old scars). My hands and face get a LITTLE dry after I shower, but some home made coconut/olive oil/shea butter lotion takes care of that. I used to be itchy and scaly like mad. Since I got my d levels up, it is rare and mild when it does pop up.

Hubby gets dandruff and has psoriasis. They follow the same pattern. Mild in summer, horrible in winter. He started supplementing with D and now he is almost to summer levels. The dandruff is gone now, but the psoriasis is still there. It never goes away, but with vitamin D it isn't insane and annoying.
