Hits close to home. DGS is a horrible person, at 14 even now. He's been a jerk since he was about 5. He thinks he knows everything and becomes very hostile if he's ever told he's completely mistaken. He has grown up believing that knowledge (as compared to others) and perfection (being more right than others) is social currency and required for social acceptance / relationships / love.
We 'watched' him while his parents and sis were in Italy last month. Two weeks. We only saw him when I called him for dinner. One time he lit the gas range and put one of my copper pots on the fire, cus he was going to make ramen. He let the pot heat up, then added the water. Hubs found this and told him to add the water to the pot and then bring it to a boil. He wouldn't hear of that. "Nobody does that. This makes the water boil faster." I banished him from using my ONE copper pot ever again.
Two days later, he doing it correctly in a Revere ware pan. He was boiling the water. And boiling the water. I said, hey J, your water is ready. He said it wasn't. It need to boil harder. I said that it won't be boiling any harder cus its at 212 degrees and unless it has a substrate in there, 212 will be the hottest it will get and this boiling will be the best you'll be getting. He huffed off and never made ramen again.
His parents (my DD) let him ride the city bus all the time. Alone. To where ever he wants. For hours at a time. It gets him out of their hair and they think it makes him feel more independent. Then he shows up at home and is all proud of his travels and they are too..........
