Dealing with MIL during FIL ALZ

Sumi, I'm always getting trash ads on this site. Slinky little bits of clothing that are not appropriate for a woman of any age, let alone... a 63 y.o. grand mother.

My magical evenings consist of laying in bed with window open, feeling a cooling breeze and watching fire flies or stars twinkling overhead. Or listening to Whip-Poor-Wills, Owls, tree frogs, or coyotes singing in the distance.

I wish I could have my bedroom window open in the evenings My house is right on the road though and between people coming out of the pubs and farmers moving bales around at midnight, it's far too noisy.

I remember having to deal with my mother's Alzheimers, plus she was always a mean #itch to me even before that. If it wasn't for my friends, I'd have ended up in a rubber room. I didn't expect them to fix it; just listen and give me their sympathy. That was what I needed to push through.

Major update... My FIL got sick again and ended up in the hospital. He stayed in the hospital 5 days and is now in a nursing home full time.

I hate to say it... But I'm happy about this. He's going to get the care he needs and I might be able to actually sleep a full night now. Without getting a call from my MIL to help get him up off the floor and back in bed.

My MIL was shocked when we went to go visit him in the nursing home and he didn't recognize her. All I can say... ALZ keeps on taking and never gives any thing back. What absolutely horrible disease - it sucks!

I agree with FEM.

I still remember the days & nights with mom here. When she went to the nursing home, you never knew what to expect -- as in, would she know you, her mood, her abilities. It changed from hour to hour, honestly. This disease is so hard on everyone.

You vent all you want! It does help you to release some of the pent up feelings -- and yes, they are every type of feeling!! It's ok. Many of us have been thru it, too. Sadly.

It's a hard & rocky road.

I was reading about the stages of ALZ. He has had pneumonia 3 times over the last 6 months. "The most frequent proximate cause of death is pneumonia."

I need to stop thinking about this, its just to sad. I need to go and do something to get my mind off my FIL and ALZ for a while.

Has he had a speech therapy evaluation to assess his swallowing? Often silent aspiration is the issue, and a change in diet texture (including liquids) will help to guard the airway. Of course, there may need to be other changes made in his meal times as well... Some folks need to eat in an environment that is void of distractions. Also, positioning when eating is key to preventing aspiration.

You may find that he rallies in the nursing home. It's hard to think of a loved one having to go to a nursing home, especially a lock down dementia unit, where one often sees disturbing behaviors in abundance. But... The activities provided, as well as the dependable routine, the extra attention to providing frequent finger food snacks throughout the day, instead of the standard 3 meals that we have come to consider to be normal, Speech, OT, and PT to address issues with communication, daily activities, mobility can result in improvement. Yes, Alzheimer's dz. is progressive. But, there are many things that can be done to ease the path for patient and family.
