it was hard work, tractor troubles, animal troubles, feeding by the ton, nothing done in a small way lol

but after 15 years we got tired. So we shut 'er down. Believe me it was hard to quit, but NOW, I am so glad we quit. The time I have is so super amazing I can't describe it. I got my life back LOL

everything changes I keep telling myself. from one way to another thru life...we went with the flow, slowed down and enjoy the days a little more less hectic :p

LOL Gina

Ok here goes. Well hummm?????

Almost 2 acres. I use about half that now.

I have and do everything I can to be as self sufficient as I can.

This year it's gonna be those meat birds. Weather I like it or not. :sick

I can, have everything I need for that. Plus extras.
I dehydrate, supplies covered.
I sew, supplies covered.
I crochet, supplies covered.
I learned to shoot my rifle this year, supplies covered.
Big dog, supplies covered
Store food water and necessities for emergencies. Supplies covered.
Small family orchard. With about 12 trees.
My garden, as of this year planted in every pot and bucket I can find. down the slope and up the hill.
I store extra seeds. Heirloom and regular.
Turkeys, chickens, a rabbit.
I have my fifth wheel . If I have to, I can load it and get out of dodge.
Extra generator
dh has almost every tool known to man kind.
Oil lamps, and fuel

Things I know I need.

A really good grain mill, I would like to save for the country living hand mill.
Big stainless pot.
More animals, cow, goats.
I would love a wood stove.
Farm in Mo.
:D

I am sure there are other things I did not cover but to be honest I have been working on this for a couple years. I hope I am getting close.

Chickens, some canned food, three wells (one hand dug so if I had to I could bucket brigade), pressure canner, woods in back for free firewood, etc. I have tons of canning jars and lids, for sure am going to build a dehydrator this year. Peach and mulberry trees, raspberry bush, lonely grape vine that was a waste of money.

Have the stuff for several passive solar projects - not built
Have the stuff for rocket mass heater - not built
Have some of the stuff for VAWT - not built
Have some of the stuff for small greenhouse attached to outbuilding - not built.

We're still living in a construction zone, and my husband has told me that we have bigger fish to fry right now. :/

Took an online herbalism course and PRINTED off what I thought I might need. Started Balm of Gilead as it was the right time of year for cottonwood buds. Have an extensive list and pictures of wild edibles in our area. so this year I will gather more. I have a good sized garden, 4-1/2 acres, 2 planted in orchard grass that reseeds. Hand tools for about any project. Wood stove, not for cooking, but I cook on it a lot. Ordered non-GMO seed this year to start seed saving. I make everything that I can from scratch, from cooking, cleaning supplies, personal products and using family cloth.
And I don't rely on my computer to store information. I agree, knowledge is very important. But if we ever live off the grid, I'm not sure I'd have a computer.

We reuse everything for some other purpose if we can, make some of our furniture and cabinetry and favor used over new.

Agh, I'm having a hard time keeping this to self reliance after reading the gloom and doom threads. The bottom line for me is that I take everything one step at a time, asking how I can have this/make this/do this on the cheap, using materials I have here already. I do believe that Nature gives me everything that I need.

I have several months of food stored up

I can cook, sew, and am not squeemish

I do all my cooking from scratch and as local and organic as possible

I don't buy things I don't need, have no debt

Just got the water covered - yay. Rain barrel and water storage barrel. (Plus we have a pool in the back yard and a katadyn filter for it)

8 chickens (dual purpose mostly) for eggs.

Started getting back into SS after we moved to this house. The garden is started, have 3 kinds of berries, 2 lemon trees, orange tree and peach tree.

1 dehydrator, 1 yogurt maker, pressure canner, stock pot, etc.

I cook almost everything we eat, including much of the bread. Just got the pasta extruder so I can make homemade spaghetti in addition to the tagliatelle and other pastas I was already making.

2 grills and a smoker (1 is a weber, the other is a side-by-side with charcoal and propane)

tent, sleeping bags, campstove

fireplace and wood (not enough but some)

Some canned food. If the power goes out though, I'll be canning the rest. (I've got a lot of frozen sauces - I should go through and can those up so they're shelf-stable.)

So yeah. Like that.

Oh - and yeah, guns and ammo. And some experience hunting and shooting...

ETA: We just got solar on the house, but it's tied to the grid. Eventually, we'll add a battery backup.
