Our creamery just opened it's doors to the public and is selling ice cream, cheese, curds, etc. I was so excited to be able to support the local farmers until I realized I wasn't going to be able to afford it.
They are charging $15 for a 2lb. brick of cheddar cheese. $8 for a half gallon of ice cream.
This is made right on site with no middleman to hike up prices.
I'm just bummed.
These prices are not outrageous by any means.

Being in Alaska cost to run animals is higher with hay and feed. Just maintaining animals in super cold temps is super expensive.

My friend owns a dairy in NC...mild weather and her feed bill per year is $40,000 with 300 head.

And small farms do not get discounts. If I could by tractor trailer loads of feed I would be paying at least 60% less then when I buy by the ton.

Small farms also must factor in all expense. Power to milk etc. thru machines and computers etc. is in excess of $1000 per month for electric.

In Alaska who knows what costs prevail.

Fresh is best. I would buy that cheese and eat a little less...LOL
