Right, I want it to look old and worn. No matter what I do, it will be worn in the area where I have my chair in front of my desk.

Of course, it's the top coat that determines the wear. We can cover the floors with glued on tissue paper as long as there's plenty of urethane over it.

I got all the smaller stuff out of the room yesterday. Now the space seems huge and a somewhat daunting task. I am going to do a small-ish area first to see how it looks. Right now I'm more concerned that when I sand the 'worn' areas, the paint will peel instead of just sand down to the first color or the wood. I hope that plenty of cure time between coats will help with that.
How about paper-mache with newspaper first? Cool visual texture plus smoothing over rough and patched spots. You can thin paint if you want some of the print to show for a rustic look. ;) And a good floor finish on top.

Now that would be an interesting floor treatment!

The walls are so busy in this room that I need to stay with something fairly plain on the floor. (Did I actually just say that??? me?? anything plain??)

I THINK that the un-coated milk paint will do just exactly what you are describing - without the sanding. Just a little walking and it should "wear down" in just the way you want.

Maybe after it gets as you like it you could top coat it then. ;)

We have a 5,000 square foot home and ALL of our floors are painted. Most of the flooring is yellow pine and my husband put round
wood plugs over the nailholes to make it look older. In a few of the rooms he put down wide plank white pine with all the gorgeous
knots in it. We are eccentric homesteading types who have been living shabby chic and repurposing everything for 20 years before
it was 'mainstream and eco-friendly thing to do'. We chose a pale green that has a hint of turquoise in it - sounds terrible but looks
great! Don't worry about it looking old as the paint will wear with use - we like the look even better now than when we first painted it.
Sorry I don't know what type of paint he used - I just picked the color! I think you'll be very happy with paint on a wood floor but not
sure about it being a sub-floor and not finished boards.

Sounds wonderful!
Yes, if we had boards instead of plywood, it'd be a lot easier.

And :frow welcome from central Kansas! Take a minute and introduce yourself over at the 'where are you, where am I' thread, k?

I actually have painted many floors...
the trick is to First prime with 321 which is an awsome thick primer...
if able because floors are so well used and scrubbed...I put down 2 coats and then 2 good coats of floor..paint..
the nicest floor I painted was an awful yellowed stained linolium...paunted first a lighter shade then after dried I covered over with a darker brown then rubbed off,,,and it went into the original linolium pattern...was quite affective;)

Wow, I was just thinking about this again today!

I got voted out on the painted floor idea shortly after I started this thread back in July. DH was dead set on having carpet in that area.

Now that we got to clean up three..uh... presents (upchuck) from one of the cats, the painted floor might be back in the running. ;) The room is completed except for that dang floor. But you know how life is, we kept on going to another, messy project.
