While I like the "distressed" look that oldnamvet mentioned, I prefer it on harder woods. I used to have a small pine bookshelf/cubby type thing, but we moved multiple times over the years and it was the first thing to not last in those sorts of conditions. It's just not for me.

Pine tree is soft but I guess that can make furniture from it. Just be sure that you aren’t going to make it into your chair or something.

Regardless of use, there's nothing that smells better in the wood shop than good old pine.

Pine - Not your mothers switch any longer

I have had a set of pine hutches I built ten years ago and four major moves ago. Still as sturdy as the day I built them and the stain still looks as good as the day I applied it. They have gotten heavy every day use as tv stands, pot and pan storage and plate ware storage and even used a make shift closet at one point. No they are not maple or oak, but then they cost less than $50 a peace to build so I think I more than got monies worth out of them. An yes I do like the dings and such, gives furniture character in my most humble opinion.

Thanks

I built night stands from red oak and pine. Well, at least the tops anyway. The tops are butcher block style with 7/16 strips glued, planed, and molded edges. I alternated the oak and pine for color contrast. They are only 2 or so years old now so I cant really speak to their durability yet. However, I think the pine looks great laid in next to the red oak and my guess is that it will for a long time. I finished the table with clear pour filler and 8 coats of polyurethane. which I believe should compensate for the relative softness of the pine. -- just my 2 cents.

There was a company that sold pine furniture at our local Renaissance Festival, a few years ago.

It seemed sturdy enough, but then I hadn't seen it after it had been in a home with little kids banging around on it!

I built this about 8 years ago. It's actually 6 pieces because I had a small shop then, and had to deliver 2 pieces at a time.
