Poor Spike is having ear issues. They are gross and crusty. Smell horrid. I have been cleaning them with olive oil but they are still nasty.

Any advise???

if it got that far to a horrid smell....I hate to say but a trip to the vet sounds the best. Infection of some sort probably and the vet has the meds to fix this problem. Dog is probably in pain also? so it might be the time to spend the cash lol

I know, I just took my pup to the vet....$117 for pup shots etc. I almost fell over. I haven't been to the vet in ages cause I gave my dogs their own shots etc. So that price floored me lol

but yea, almost sounds like vet time for you now. Seems it might be out of control and he needs some vet meds.

hope it gets cleared up soon.

After you get it cleared up, may sure if you bathe the dogs, you get the inside of their ears really dry when you are done.

Last dog bath, I got in a hurry and missed that step, and now we're dealing with it too. :(

I don't think I would be putting olive oil in my dogs ears. $.02
We use T8 Keto to flush our dogs ears out.
It is an antibacterial, antifungal formula that has worked very well for us. We have 3 dogs with large floppy ears and we have to stay on top of them to prevent any problems. I would HIGHLY recommend you get to the Vet and let him take a look........

Excellent advice. You want the dog ear to be dry, not wet. Oily might be good to kill mites in a cats ear, but other than that I wouldn't put oil in an ear. It was a good thought, but you want the ear to dry out. That is why the flush SKR8PN mentioned is good, and it kills off the yeast that tends to grow in ears. But he is referring to maintenance of floppy dog ears.

You are in a different situation here. Both the word crusty and the horrid smell make it sound like the dog has a chronic ear infection, which is extremely common. Unfortunately, the ear needs to be carefully deep cleaned, medicated and put on antibiotics. Then you continue the medication at home for awhile. If you do NOT do this, you run the risk that the ear shaking and irritation will cause the ear flap to swell up and have what they call an ear hematoma, which then requires SURGERY to fix and it becomes a more chronic issue for the dog sometimes.

Really is time for the vet if you can in any way afford it. If not, I would at least buy a different ear flush designed for dog ears and clean those ears really really gently and well. But it sounds like that would have been a good remedy last month and now you are needing more advanced help to clear this up. But a good dog ear cleaner is designed to dry out the ear when you are done as much as possible.
I hope this helps!

PS: some dogs ears are really really hard to keep up on these days, hope I didn't sound like I thought you were not keeping up....sometimes it takes a lot of effort to keep a floppy eared dog from having ear issues. I had one once that had to have daily cleaning pretty much forever so I know it can be a challenge, but that was the best prevention for him.

Sometimes allergies can play a part in dogs acquiring allergies and ear infections. What kind of food are you using?

I agree 100 % with regular cleanings. We have two Chocolate Labs and a Golden Retriever, ALL have the floppy ears, and ALL require a check at least once a week to stay on top of any developing issues. The Black and Tan Coon dog pup we rescued last fall had HORRIBLE ear infections. Our Vet used something I had never seen before. It was a medicine he had to put way down in the ear canal with a wide mouth syringe. The stuff set up like beeswax and stayed in the ears for about a week before the pup finally shook it out. Cleared his ears up with just ONE application!!

sounds like a rampant yeast infection to me... if it is as bad as it sounds a trip to the vet would be best. They can give you some easy tips on slowing down yeast infections because they can go from itchy ears to insane infections pretty rapidly.

I want some of that stuff! I have used Mometamax, which is kind of like that but it is once daily, just one application would be so handy for dogs that are fractious especially.

I have to take Gracie Sue in for some blood work this week(maintenance, nothing unusual!) I'll ask Dr Dave what it was he used on John Boy' ears.
