we went and did it. Got a Papillion yesterday. Male

name is either Whitey or Gizmo---Nicole doesn't have a clue what to name it. Just went to the store and bought a carrier and all that dog mes.

last night was fine. he stayed in the back room with her and he slept under a turned over laundry basket...hey came in handy. I stuck him in it and he jumped out....so I put the towel on the floor and turned the basket on him and instant cage! :) he wimpered 2 times and slept the whole night, no problems

yikes......

I know I will regret this for the next 12-15 years

but I did it for Nicole. Obviously she is thrilled.

I will have to start dog house therapy soon. I am not an indoor dog person and I feel weird actually...kinda like what is this rat doing in my house...haha---but I am very slowly getting my blood pressure under control

So house under dog rule but believe me the dog is under my rules! :)
very limited

Ha, you did it! Congratulations to your daughter! :)

I am totally not a small-dog person but have pretty well liked the few Papillons I've known. He'll grow on you, I bet :)

Have fun,

Pat

Awwww!

Actually I love small dogs; we've limited our fostering to small dogs for the last few years & much prefer it. At least you can pick them up & PUT them outside when they don't want to go!

(Harder to do with a 70 lb pibble) :/

My only advice is....stop thinking of it as a rat but rather as a cute stuffed toy that eats and poops! You'll be happier the sooner you accept it and enjoy it. I'm still working on this with my pigs, but at least they live at the far end of my property and won't be moving into the house until they are wrapped in freezer paper....

The other bit I have is to get to some puppy classes and get him socialized and well trained. Many small dogs do not get much actual training because they can be picked up. I take care of a friend's tiny dog once a year and he comes here with horrible manners (or lack thereof) and leaves more well-behaved each time. Imagine if he was trained year-round instead of a few days a year! Imagine if he was trained by someone who actually knew what they were doing!

If you've never done classes before (usually called "puppy kindergarten" around here) they are a blast. I just laughed the entire hour. What is cuter than a roomful of puppies? And we had homework to do each week and the accountability really helped get me to get the tasks done. I had so much fun with my first dog that I went on to take agility classes with him because it was so much fun. It really went a long ways towards socializing him to other dogs and people. And training me, a newbie with dogs, especially since I naively thought that it would be similar to training horses.....some principles are the same, but predator vs prey animal....two very different psychologies and it was very humbling!

I was under the full control of a fluff-ball poodle puppy....
