I need some training help!

I have a 10 yr old shletie who really was never properly trained. He is a good boy, but has had a pee issue forever.

He used to occasionally pee in our house. On the carpet, mostly if 1) it was raining or 2) we were one for too long and he was mad (even though he had a doggy door)

In the next house, there was no carpet and I am pretty sure no one had a dog there....he never peed inside. Yay! Problem solved :)

Now in this house, still no carpet, in the last week or so, he has decided that he can pee in the house. :barnie

The last family that lived here did have two little dogs, so maybe he smells their urine, I don't know.

How can I break this habit? He does it at night or early morning. Not everyday either. For example last night I made sure he had an extra potty break OUTSIDE before I went to bed, but I still found pee this morning. He either does it before I get up or when I am waking up my little one for school. It is usually dark out and I don't like to let him out in the dark because we have coons (found tracks in the yard) and coyotes. I had him sleep in the laundry room a few times....maybe that is the solution and only let him out when it is light enough to go outside.

Any other ideas?

Is he crate-trained? USUALLY they won't pee in their crate.

I admit I'm a wimp when it comes to my pets. I had an old pug from a busted puppy mill who was never house-trained...he wore a diaper until the day he died. :(

One of my dogs now gets up & pees in the middle of the night. Just like yours, won't go outside if it's dark, cold, raining, etc. We just gave up & gave him his own inside-potty...one of those puppy training pads in an out-of-the-way corner where no one goes. At least he keeps it there & not all over the house. :/

You may want to crate train him. Most of the time they won't go in their crate but I did have a dog who did. But she wasn't all there in the head. I also had an older dog whose internal clock seemed to have changed and she slept more during the day and then was up at night.

If it is not a training issue but an age-related incontinence, I have a client who swears by cornsilk tea. It works in the early stages of some types of mild incontinence. That is all I know about it, though. Corn silk smells very grassy so it should be easy to get them to take it.

My dog peed in his crate. If he had to go he went. I would say your pup is getting up in age so he probably needs to go more frequently. Combined with the fact that hes in a new house that smells like other dogs.

Maybe some Natures Miracle in the places hes peeing will not only get rid of his smell but the last dogs as well.

I guess if you crate him at least if he does have an accident it will be contained.

OMG u gave me a flashback to my post about Nicole begging for a muttley WOW this is exactly why I can't do indoor animals LOL

everyone to themselves but for me, if this happened in my house, I would pass out hahaha

honestly put the sucker outside lol

but for indoor crate train, or shut him up in the mud room with pee pads or something like that --so at least u can control where he goes, if he pees

10 yr old might be having some pee issues with health also--just wondering???

Has this dog been fixed? If the answer is no, get him fixed NOW.......

You need to go back to house training basics. Get out the crate and USE IT! Religiously. Do not cut him ANY slack for at least a year. Pretend he is a puppy and you are just starting out.
1. At night, take him out for one last chance to go potty. TAKE him out, don't just let him out. Give him the "go potty" command and don't bring him back in until he goes. When he does go potty outside, praise, praise and more praise.
2. He sleeps in the crate every night, all night, no exceptions.
3. When you get up in the morning, the first thing you do is TAKE him outside and give the command again. Don't let him back inside until he goes. Again, when he does go potty outside, praise, praise and more praise.
4. He goes in the crate whenever you go to work, the store, the neighbors, etc. He gets ZERO time without supervision.
5. This is the biggy. Watch him like a hawk, and if he even THINKS about raising his leg in the house, come down on him with your b i t c h hat on and get him outside ASAP. When he goes potty outside, praise, praise and more praise.

Rinse and repeat until he "get's it".
