I took my little fat sheltie to the vet today to update shots.

We have recently cleaned up a terrible foul odor problem by going to a raw diet. I bathe him every week or two. I have noticed that if I go too long he suddenly develops a bad odor.

He is FAT and the vet said he has folds around his backside that are trapping moisture creating a yeasty environment.

She recommended using an anti-fungal shampoo on his back side once or twice a week until he sheds the weight (we are working on decreasing his intake but she is completely fine with the raw diet)...which according to her math is in about 16 months! at 1/2 pound per month! :barnie

I was wondering about any natural ingredients that I could use? I use baby wipes on his chin and chest after eating because he gets icky. I am wondering if there is anything I could put on a wipe to wipe his rear down daily to keep the yeast at bay.

Any ideas?

cornstarch in the folds of skin--like baby powder. keep the areas dry--b/c yeast grows in moist warm areas. I know yogurt can work topically when applied to girly yeast infections, might work here too. Butcornstarch in the folds does work. (I had two fat babies. )

Our oldest Chocolate Lab has an inverted vulva. We have to clean it twice weekly with hydrogen peroxide, then dry her off. If it gets really bad, I use a moist paper towel with a drop of dish washing liquid. Then I go back with just a wet paper towel, then a dry one.

The fungal creams for athletes foot will all work topically, as do the powders like tinactin or Gold bond.

Oil of Oregano or Oregano leaf powder added to his feed will cure him of harboring the yeast from the inside, I had to do that myself for 3 months once for a recurrent situation, topical was just taking it off for a week or so then it came right back. A health or natural food store will have both in the yeast buster section.

Nu-Stock....wonderful ointment that is supposed to be great for fungal infections, particularly in animals. The ingredients are merely pine tar, sulfur and mineral oil.

I get mine at my local feed store but you can buy it online also. One tube goes a long way...it has a sulfur odor but it works great!

Supposed to be great for rain rot, ring worm, etc. Supposedly great for promoting new hair growth to the affected area as well.

I have heard that corn starch isn't good for things like that because it feeds the problem? I can't remember the details, but I remember reading that a plain talc powder is better. :idunno

I think that yeast feeds on cornstarch..
