Good to hear from you! Glad to hear that things are coming together for you. How much land do you have?

Deb, not a lot, about half an acre only. But I'm surrounded on 3 sides by my landlord's brother's pastures and he has acres and acres off the stuff. I think in future, if needed, I'll ask him if I can rent the bit in front of my house from him as well. They put their dairy cows on it over Summer. It was quite funny yesterday afternoon, I sat down in the living room downstairs and looked through the window to find a cow staring at me. I love living on a farm again :)

You can do a lot w/half an acre. That's what I have at home. If I had to do it again, I'd do the yard a whole lot different. I'd be able to grow so much more if I did.

It's a lovely piece of land, I just wish I had some outbuildings! I have a small shed out there and that's it. I'm looking for secondhand sheds online, occasionally a good one comes up at a low price. I need to get some coops and pens in place for my chicken plans and then see how the space goes. I have a small veggie patch in the back here that I put some strawberry plants in so long. I think it's way too late in the season to try and do anything else. Next year…

The weather here is interesting and I think I'm going to have some challenges with that when growing stuff. Apart from the nearly daily rain, it's windy, windy, windy and often so.

Your pup is adorable, I love the look of bull terriers. What's her name?
A half acre is what we have also, and while it's too small for large animals, we do very well with a largish garden, some fruit trees and my ducks. There would be room for a couple of goats too, if DH would let me, although I would have to buy hay as we wouldn't have any pasturage for them.

hope you can settle in and "bloom where you are planted". is this a property you are going to purchase or are you going to rent while you look for that perfect place? half an acre isn't much but it beats the heck out of an apartment. the puppy is adorable, what did you name her. her face makes you smile. and i'll bet she keeps your son occupied for hours.

I think most of the half acre is going to end up going to the chickens eventually, though I marked a small area for a garden.

My landlord returned to Ireland 3 days ago and told me the pup has to go :( I spoke to his SIL when I first came to view the house and she o.k.'d it. She clearly did not know about his decision to not allow dogs here again. Apparently the previous tenants' dogs causes endless hassle here and that put him off.

My son is very upset, but I told him when we buy our own place one day we can look into getting a dog again. For now it will have to be chickens and fish and my mealworm colony. I decided to start a little meal worm farm and sell some worms locally. They are quite expensive here and they sell quite well according to the pet shop owners I spoke with, so I figured what the hey? Another income stream wouldn't hurt.

oh no, i know your son has to be crushed. I'm so sorry. is there any chance of talking to the landlord again and maybe he changing his mind? a meal worm is just not a good pet! i think the colony is a good idea tho. i know ds1 buys them to feed to the birds but i never have just because of the expense. they will be good protein for the chickens too. just remember that having a landlord isn't forever:hugs
