dumb dairy question

ok my neighbor told me to come and get some milk for Christmas, so I went over there while he was milking

and we got to talking
and well thinking I was being helpful I put the lid on my bucket all by myself, lol

now when I got home I see that I also put in two small peices of straw

dumb question begins now

is it ruined? or do I just take out the straw and go forth like usual?

pssss if it freaks you out then pasteurize it on the stove.

I came home from milking a few months ago now, I put the milk in half gallon glass canning jars, and there in the jar, about half way down the side, was a black goat hair!!

I use a strainer on top of the jar so I was at a loss as to how a hair could be in the milk!

So.. I just restrained the jar, and we are all still alive!

I figured lots of worse things fell into the milk back when grandpa milked by hand, lol

but you know I live in this modern germophobic world, :rolleyes:

I hand milk, and when the goat sticks her foot in the bucket, I do throw out that batch! That happens much less now that I am getting more proficient at milking!

LOL yes muddy goat foot stomp, I toss it. Or at least put it to some use other than humans drinking it. Fortunately that was rare.

Goat hairs? Got them almost every day. Strained them out. Straw can't be any worse.

But my first time, yup, I was like "Ewwww, how do people milk and never get anything in it?

I did strain as it was going in sometimes too.

Can't remember who did it, but I love the method someone talked about chilling the milk AND straining it while milking. :)

That might have been me... I made these "chilller" things out of quilted fabric and velcro that hold freezer packs against the jar while I strain the milk into them.

Milk has multiple systems to deal with bacteria....remember the kids/calves/lambs will be nursing from a teat that was in contact with the ground and needed to survive all that bacteria. So relax!

We all had to learn to relax around germs, living a homestead life there are germs! But raw milk will deal with a lot of germs, better than pasteurized milk will. Pasteurizing is not necessary if one is closely monitoring the health of one's dairy animals and methods of dealing with the milk.

Enjoy your bounty of fresh, raw milk and don't worry!
