I totally understand....case in point...when I was student teaching the sixth grade I had a remedial english class. There was a lovely boy that did a pretty good job when he was involved with the class but when it came time for him to take a test he almost always got Ds or Fs. NOBODY ever asked him why there was such a difference. I sat down with him one day and he almost cried telling me that he just couldn't study because his single mother worked 2 jobs to keep clothes on their backs, a roof over their head, and food in their bellies. He had 3 younger siblings that he had to get off the bus, feed and bathe, help with homework and then he was just too tired to study.

He and I talked about some time management skills that he could use to help him sneak in some study time and his next test he got a C! Now my cooperating teacher used to hang all the As on a bulletin board in the classroom (something I don't agree with, btw) and when the tests were handed out and my student didn't get his I pointed to the bulletin board. After class he came to me and asked why I put his C on the board with all the As. I told him that he brought is grade up 30 points and that was something to be proud of. He was so excited that he almost cried.

Sometimes good kids in bad situations fall through the cracks because there are so many in the schools now that we as teachers cannot give everyone the individual time they deserve. It is a sad situation when the government is eliminating teaching jobs and cutting budgets in schools but they can do all sorts of other projects that cost millions. Something is seriously wrong with that!

Now that I am off my soapbox.............how was your day back? :D

Wow, what a deal on those tomatoes! Now you have your work cut out for you, preserving them

I can understand your frustration with schools and parents who don't care for their kids. It is so sad to know that there are kids who live in those awfull conditions. I have known a few myself and unfortunately meet more all the time :(

This reminds me though, that I have stuff to give to one of our local elementary schools. That will be good incentive for me to go through some of my stuff and put a box or two together. I donate art and craft supplies and anything else usefull that I come across to my stepson's former elementary school. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of single working moms or where both parents work for minimum wages as well as negligent parents. So I like to help our school out with whatever I have to give.
Since I like to go to our Goodwill outlet store and will pick up some neat stuff sometimes for next to nothing, I donate it to the school.

I have donated musical instruments, books and lots of new or as good as new teaching aids, art supplies, paper etc.

It is my way of helping out.

Keep up the good work. It is nice to know there are good people like you in our schools. :hugs
