Yes, let's make government a little bit bigger and more invasive. How about another bureau of do-nothing government employees. We could call it the BHCW (Bureau of Hot Coffee Watchers) and pay them enormous salaries.

Help wanted: Coffee Nazi

well actually the minute you rely on others to cook and prepare meals for you...darn right I want some kind of rules in place and 'someone' to take control of what and how it is prepared. Could you imagine the troubles if restaurants were unregulated --OMG!

------------ One devoted White Castle customer is suing the restaurant chain because he can't fit into the restaurant's booths. Martin Kessman, who weighs 290 pounds, complained to management for more than two years after repeatedly knocking his knee into the tables' metal supports. --------------
I'm tall and my knees get knocked all the time. Maybe I should get some legal advice...

I am wondering when one of these 'incidents' will become the movie of the week on tv.

This isn't anything new. We've had local health codes governing things like temperatures of food and drink in restaurants for nearly 100 years. It's part of the county health department's responsibilities, and in theory it can vary, but in practice it doesn't vary much at all. Even less now that ServSafe standards are being widely (voluntarily) adopted. There is a science to temping food and drink safely. Incorrect temping is called "time and temperature abuse" for a reason.

Restaurants want coffee in the big machines/carafes to literally be boiling hot because then they can get away with holding the coffee longer and cleaning the machines less often. The coffee tastes scuzzy that way, but lots of people drink terrible coffee (yeah, I'm a food snob, and if you are on SSF I bet you are, too :) ) and it's bacteria free at boiling temp, so it won't infect anyone.

I also order coffee cool (131F) at coffee shops. At restaurants, I order the coffee cup 3/4 full and cream, always, just to cool it. I was a server/bartender for 5 years, and I overfilled a coffee cup ONCE. That is not a mistake you make twice, let me tell you. Boiling liquids are nothing to play around with, especially if the patron does not realize that they are boiling.

I am libertarian on issues of personal freedom, so I wouldn't fuss if we abolished mandatory health codes, and instead let restaurants choose whether or not they wanted to adhere to a standard (like ServSafe, which I'm sure they'd advertise like heck, LOL). However, when they got someone sick or severely burned, I'd want the injured patron to be able to sue.

Not that we've wandered fully off topic, the guy suing White Castle over the booths is a tad bit ridiculous. Do Little People sue because they don't fit into booths well? As a builder's daughter, the reason that standard measurements are standard are not custom fit every human frame- it's to include the majority of people. Very large and very small people have a tough time fitting into clothes, beds, cars, etc. Why not sue Levi's while he's at it? Silly.

Can I sue someone? I have a terrible time finding clothes that I like that fit me. More often than not, if I see something I like, it's way too big. :(
