Fencing in the Garden

Oh, a gate is not optional, its necessary. At 60 you don't jump out of the back of trucks and you don't climb over fences no matter how short. - When I fall it sounds like a croaker sack full of mason jars were dropped from the top of the house.

yea hubby wanted me to vault over the fence we just put up for the dog. I could see my foot catching, me falling like a ton of bricks and I opted to go out one gate, and come in another. I tell ya at some point the jumping is done. for me it is 50 now

If you use the plastic fencing leave an end open that can be looped onto the bamboo like a gate. I have not fallen often going over fencing,but it has happened enough for me to start doing a *gate*.

And if you have the gate...use it!

I'd put up a 2' tall chicken wire fence around my flower bed to keep the chickens from scratching up some newly planted irises. Now this "gate" is wide enough to drive a truck through. So, one day I'm at the opposite end of where the gate is located and decide to save myself some time and just climb over the fence.

First foot and leg are over the fence, I've got this licked, I'm sure of it!

Go to bring my second leg over and BAM!...I'm body slamming a solid chunk of rock (which I knew was there, but had an "out of sight - out of mind" moment since the bed was full of fallen leaves).

So much for saving time, took me 10 - 15 minutes to get myself back together.

No rocks were hurt during this episode.

Don't try to step over a polywire electric fence either. They wrap around your leg and make you vibrate for a long time before you can get off the ground! It also makes for a very bad hair day.

Man, I bet a lot of us could tell some "funny" stories about falling. Amazing how you can be upright and on top of the world one second, then one second later, your whole world has changed. I feel for you guys--been there myself. Here's hoping we all keep both feet on the ground this year.

And your center of gravity would be lower, so you would be much more stable!

Hi- I just use wood stakes with my chicken wire. It is the standard size- nothing fancy!. And when I need a gate, I just overlap the end and tie a couple pieces of twistie wire and it will open and close just fine. I also staple gun the chicken wire to the stakes for support. And you can put a stake on both side of the gate opening, it helps make the gate function easier.

Physically yes, mentally, not so much!!!!!
