The boys love to go fishing (especially DS3) and have been bugging DH to go and probably will in the next week or two and several more times over the summer.
Usually I've put the scrap in the garden or compost pile, but wondered about giving it to the hens. Can they eat stuff like bones, scales, heads, innards, tail, etc?

Chickens can eat almost anything. They probably WON"T eat the bones, but you could put them in the compost after they get them picked clean.

My Grandma Nettie used to talk about the depression times. Her family used to scour the road for roadkill to take home to the chickens. Great and very cheap way to supply them with protein. ;)

Sure, knock yourself out. Just be aware that chickens differ in how much fish they can eat before their eggs start tasting weird... of course, if you do end up with some eggs too fishy-tasting for your preferences you can always just cook them and feed them back to the chickens.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

My beek friend traded me 3 roosters for 2 layers yesterday.
All 3 smelled of fish because his dad is a professional fisherman. Yay local fish but :sick fishy smelling chickens!

They pick through the cleanings to get what they want. Mostly eggs & bits of the flesh. They go crazy for the fish eggs though.

Aren't chickens kind of like tiny vultures?

I never pictured that before I had chickens, I had a mental image of these gentle creatures with chicks following behind them in a row, pecking feed gently from my hand. :gig :gig :gig

 SD I need to get a nighttime pic of my mom feeding for you! She sits in a chair and they surround her like a pack of dogs! My two little ones sit on her arm.

Gentle chickens, lol.

 were you hallucinating????? :gig

Seriously though, I wasn't sure if chickens 'could' eat fish or if there was some health hazzard to be wary of.

Really....chickens? gentle creatures? ....to be honest & fair I think I had the same 'hallucination' BEFORE having my own. Now I just want to chase them with the axe :somad
