Thanks everyone. Yes, I think Epi Otic is one of the washes I have. I also have that medicine the vet gave me last time. I am going to try to get another round in his hears today.
Just so you guys know....if you go to the pet store and look at the ingredients on the ear washes....most are water and vinegar. I went to buy some at Petsmart and read the labels on 3 or 4 of them and they were all the same...2 ingredients....water and vinegar. Why am I gonna pay 5-8 bucks for something I already have at home?
I have been avidly following this thread because for a few weeks now Russell (10 month old yellow lab) has had brownish moderately-itchy ears. The vet did a swab yesterday and says it is for sure mostly a yeast issue.
I was given (ha - $65 for a wee bottle ain't *given*, lol) some Mometamax to use for a week, but have three questions:
1) I should've asked the vet but forgot, so: exactly HOW do I put this stuff in the ears? All the way in deep, or just in the deepest easily-visible recesses, or what? Do I squoosh it around or what? It has been probably 25 years since I last dealt with animals' ear drops, I just totally forget.
2) I would like to try some of the above suggestions, perhaps an ACV/water solution and/or garlic, for maintenance afterwards. How often would you do it -- on some schedule (what?) or just when brown wax builds up (how much?) or what?
3) Could someone explain exactly how to use the ACV/vinegar solution to clean the ear. Pretend you are talking to a total idiot, cuz, you ARE
Pat I look forward to hearing some of the more knowledgeable dog people answer this. I think that may have been one of my issues in the beginning. I didn't really know where to squirt the 1 ml of medicine. So I don't think it was reaching it's intended target. Now I just point down into the ear and squirt. When I rub the ear canal I can hear it squashing.
step one- clean the dog's ear canal with a cotton swab...q-tip until you get them to come out mostly brownish gunk free.
step two- mix 1 tsp water and 1 tsp ACV (raw, unfiltered--I use Braggs)
step three- pour into the affected ear/ears and hold the ear shut while mushing it around
step four--stand back cause your dog will shake the excess out
step five- make fun of said dog for "smelling like a salad" for the next 20 minutes
Do this every 3 days until the brownish gunk goes away or dries up. Then do it every 1-2 weeks if needed. I only clean out Tonka's ears once every 2 weeks or so and I keep a little container of 1/2 water 1/2 acv in the bathroom for him. I just dip a q-tip in the solution after cleaning and swab all over his ears on the inside now.
He used to have horrible yeast infections and you could smell him from across the room. His poor ears would be so raw they would bleed a little when you cleaned them out.
Lori there is not way my dog will go for this process. I was thinking of getting one of the wash containers. You know they kinda look like one of those squeeze ketchup bottles with a tip. maybe mixing 3/4 water to 1/4 Acv and squirting it in. I was even thinking warm water.
You can do that but honestly the amount of liquid needed is not that much and with a squeeze bottle you may overdo it. You may want to just try cleaning it with q tips and then when you do the last one just dip it in the ACV and swab it out. May work better...less mess, that's for sure!
You still get to make fun of him for smelling like a salad though...
Maybe I can sponge it. I just don't see Tobias letting me get anywhere near his ears with a q tip. He is so sensitive and this has been an issue for so long he groans/ growls at me. Not in a mean way but more like "not again, leave me alone".
