For me it's a tendon thing, not bone. I actually have great bone strength, I've never broken a long bone, despite a few times when a should have.
I do the foot-just-ROLLS-for-no-reason thing. And there will be a loud crunch, and few broken small bones in the ankle. It sucks hard.

One thing that has helped me strengthen them is the scrunch exercises. While watching TV, I have a towel on the floor. I scrunch it up with my toes, then smooth it out with my toes.
My aunt's physical therapist told her to do this when she wrecked her ankle, and I swiped the idea.

I NEED those!!!
I'm another barefooter. I had to stop, because we have something in our soil that gets under your skin (chiggers, maybe?). But I have spent my life barefoot. Even in the snow. I was one of those kids who carried flip flops in her pocket, because you couldn't go into the store without shoes. My bosses at one winery couldn't believe that I could go barefoot on the hot pavement and run on gravel
Until the owner's son married a Thai woman and she was just like me. We bonded instantly
You just can't climb trees properly with shoes on! I definitely walk and run diferently, when I am barefoot. I was a gymnast as a child. We did not wear shoes in the gym. So I learned to change my stride at a young age.

See, perfect! With the vibrams, no hookworm or chigger risks. When I go down to costa rica this summer, I'll be wearing them whenever we're in forests, etc. I just wish I had had them when I went to egypt! The soles are thin enough that concrete can get fairly hot in the summer.... And cold in the winter... it's pretty much like having extra thick soles on your feet. Except that you don't get stabbed by glass (as easily, not infallible) and no bad critters. :)
