In general ALL American cars depreciate faster than foreign cars of same general original value. The more expensive an American car is the faster it tanks. Used Lincolns and Caddys as in 6 or 7 years old go for nothing. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they are expensive to fix. Way too much technology in their systems and it goes out after about 100k. They should go a little lower tech. But look at that Lexus that parks itself. That's got to have some expensive suspension and steering parts. Haven't seen that commercial for a long time. Maybe too many of them crashed while parking.

Well back to the point, I was just impressed that Ford is going to re-open the plant to start making the engine here in the USA. I wish Chevy and the rest of them would invest back in the american dream again liket they used to.

***********I certainly agree with you Opie. Now is the time to support the business in America. Not rip it to shreds. When times are hard, people get vicious....bad mouth everything and everyone. I enjoy the people who support and smile at the same time...LOL Back America now when she needs it most and keep the old fingers crossed!!!!!!

I backed Chrysler back in the late 70s-80s and I'm not too keen on doing it again.

Then don't - back Ford, which I think is the American car manufacturer who is going to pull it off, without government help.

I never cared for MOPARs anyways (although a nice HEMI will catch my ear!), I'm a Heavy Chevy girl myself, although Ford trucks have won me over. :)

dacjohns-Buy American, what does that mean anymore?
I hate ford, not as name brand, but when they closed their Norfolk VA plant, all the hype about re-training, job placement and severance packages, was just for media hype. I didn't work there, never did. But I did have many friends that did.

Ford started the early outs, (covered their bottom lines in contract) and bailed on the people. The union had settled for across the board severance pays plus 6 months of medical. Wait here is the kicker....

When first shift showed up on a Monday, the gates were locked, and armed security (off duty Norfolk cops) were present to tell the workers the plant was shut down. They were advised to contact their local union reps.

SO no matter if you worked there for 3 months, or 23 years, your severance pay was the same. You still had the six months of medical, and a choice to continue that medical at ten times the cost. Wait here is the slap in the face...

Do you know what railhead is? It's when a rail yard is put in a location to move mass amounts on a railroad. So that was done, Ford paid a small fine for ending their contract with Norfolk city early. A fence was put up, housing within the fence was for the people that were taking down the factory.

Because the factory would be railheaded to Mexico, some 800+ mexicans were brought up to tare down the factory, label it, and load it. Once in Mexico, they would put it back up eight months later.

I am a zealous American, so what? I don't have any sweat shops and I pay good wages for quality work.

So I got this email last week from a member here on SS. I post on three forums, and I am not interested in answering that email. Some one asked me how could I be SS and own a Hummer that gets 4 miles to the gallon?

That email freaked me out, so much so, I posted answers to every poster on my thread on one post.

I am more SS than some of these people that post, hence my showing and advice.

So here is my answer to one of those questions/accusation put forward by that email.

I buy American whenever possible, I don't shop at wally world, and I go out of my way to support local businesses. My truck gets better mileage than your ford f-250 or ecoline line ford van dated 1980 something.

I drive a Hummer for several reasons, some you might not understand. I get 16 mpg around town and 21 highway. I am part of a winter patrol to a no winter maintance areas ( places where people have to travel to get home, but they don't service the roads in the winter ) and we help or get people home in bad weather. In the winter of 2007 I personally drove home a 4 month old baby and her mom to their house well beyond the no service sign. It was -17 degrees 0338 hrs in the morning.

The mom had tried to get up a hill, slid back, ended up in a ditch. She left the jeep with her baby, I had checked the area, found the jeep in the ditch. No footprints because of the wind, I put on my off road lights and drove forward following the road. As I rounded a bend in the road, I saw the mom walking in the snow. Problem solved, not hero just getting the job done. Most of the time, all of the time, but this one time carved on my belt, ride ins are expected and planned.

I also drive a Hummer because it's 96% American made. This isn't my first Hummer, I started with the H1 Alpha, sold it, got an H2, traded it in for an H3, traded it in for an H3 Alpha. Because I kept on purchasing a Hummer, I kept Americans working. Now that GM is dropping the brand, I might put her away as a collectors toy in the future.

Perhaps this thinking isn't understood by the person emailing me. If your truck or van was stuck, you wouldn't get out your lawn tractor to pull it out would you? Maybe you would.... Go figure...

WOW I am shocked someone had the nerve to privately email and question you about your vehicle......don't judge this forum by a few nitwits....seriously, so many can never mind their own business. At some point in this life we all can justify our choices....ones we prefer, not others....for our own reasons.

Sorry you had an idiot email from a SS nasty.......!!!!

I would own a hummer in a heartbeat if I could. I don't have any worry of "winter patrol"---LOL---I would own one cause I love them!~!!! I am as SS as the next person but choices are available in this life and WE choice what we want. I choose so many less choices in life to make good thru this journey that if I prefer a few luxuries I am having them.

I don't care if anyone agrees or disagrees with this post...---it is my opinon...LOL

What does owning a Hummer have to do with self sufficiency?

I didn't know this was a rabid save the environment forum.

I thought this forum is about self sufficiency and living within your means.

It is, Dac, and I can't believe a poster here is harrassing anyone about owning a Hummer or any other vehicle - it's a personal decision people make depending on their need, and no one from the internet is in any position to judge anyone else's needs.
